Need advice from 4040 Ro users
« on: April 15, 2014, 03:49:31 pm »
I have new 4040 twin Ro system with booster pump which I bought to replace a 450gpd system.

The tds of the water after pre-filters is around 370, after going through two 4040 membranes the product water is showing a tds in the range of 55 to 70 before going through di filter. At that rate it will cost a fortune in resin. What tds should I expect and how to achieve it?

Currently the waste to product water is 65-35.

Begining to regret buying this, my 450gpd system had a tds of 2 for product water!!   Only benefit so far is the 4040 is very quick at producing water.

Any help of advice would be appreciated.

Steve

Something isn't right. Did you flush the ro first? Have you checked to make sure all the seals a correctly seated inside. My 4040 ro when new produced 8tds from 400

Hi Lee,

That's what I thought it should be around 8tds.

I was told it was flushed through before sending out, however, how long did you flush your one through before producing 8tds?

I might also try another tds meter..just in case not right.

Thanks

Hi Steve,

Do you have pressure gauges on the filters?  What input pressure are you getting?  Which membranes are you using?

Flushing - took 3-4 hours for my TDS to drop to a normal level but it wasn't too mad before that.

I use a single 4040 with HF5 membrane and 80psi input pressure and I'm 330 or so in, 003-006 out depending on the direction of the wind.

Let us know the answers above...

Hi Vin,

Thanks for reply.

I do not have pressure gauges on pre filters. input pressure is 80psi from booster pump. axeon membranes (low pressure) are fitted.

I have just changed the tds meter and now getting tds reading of between 8 - 10, what confuses me is the old tds meter is still reading correctly on my tap water..so who knows!!   I am hoping it is the meter..will continue checking.

Thanks Lee & Vin for your help, much appreciated.

Ah, the perils of using TDS meters.

Perhaps we should change to multimeters; you'd have to convert ohms to TDS manually.  The extra effort might be outweighed by the fact that any half-decent multimeter is unlikely to drift out of calibration.

Hope it's sorted.

Are you sure you have the O ring on the membrane at the outlet side of the ro
 Houseing.

Hi ccmids,

Not sure what you mean, but I would have thought it was put together correctly as bought new from ro supplier fully assembled.

If you suspect your TDS meter you can buy calibration fluid at various TDS levels to check and adjust the accuracy.

Unchecked meters make a mockery of the religion of using only '000' water as practised regularly on here.  I've bought quite a few over the years and they were all well out of calibration from new :o

Thanks Ian, Ive ordered some calibration fluid to adjust the accuracy.

You are spot on about unchecked meters, the one I used had been on my 450gpd for two years so who knows if the readings from that were accurate!!!  I also have two hand held meters to check water tds at various times, I will re-calibrate all my meters.

Back to my new 4040, now a lot happier with it, last night filled 700 litres into my tank in a mater of around 3 hours, my old 450gpd ro used to be running almost 24/7 to keep up with my water demands.

Thanks everyone for your advice, it is appreciated.

I went for a twin ro system as firstly it produces more water and secondly it also then produces less waste water than a single.

Wow. I didn't know that, although it makes sense when you think about it.

I searched for a fomula online but haven't seen one yet.

I had the same problem.....try unplugging the inline tds meter pins. Mine had dirt on. Sorted straight away. Do it after you flush though. A good 20mins first time, then 2 or 3 mins every time. Hope that helps
