Window cleaning and hairdressing.....
« on: March 31, 2014, 08:35:55 am »
Had my hair cut on Saturday and was chatting away as you do. Going on holiday? Out tonight? Usual mindless dribble. The chap mentioned he is setting up his own salon and the owner is helping him (not in same town). So this got me thinking. I would Imagine most hairdressers are looking to go down this route....

So I was thinking is this the same with window cleaning? A good mate worked with me for a year or less and he decided to setup on how own. Is it something we should accept or maybe encourage with a Franchise.

I always here of window cleaners moaning inc myself! "Bloody worker wants to set up on his own" yada yada.

Just posted this before I start a couple of £50 houses.

The majority of hairdressers are self employed anyway. They either give a percentage to the salon owner or rent the chair space. So its kinda a natural progression to be a salon owner. Think the only exception is Toni and Guys. A  friend of mine owns the Woking salon.

ive just been for my haircut today.the local barbers are great!they only charge £8 and cotton thread your eyebrows, use cut throat razors to perfection.very skilled.i always give em a tenner as i value their service a lot.

they work long hours to make it pay though.i often notice their still open at 7pm most nights.3 of em working.they do turkish shaves as well.10 hours+ a day and are even open sundays.

real grafters and really nice guys.

ian lancaster is the man you want to speak to regarding franchising in the window cleaning business.he has been very successful as one or two others have.

I'm not sure what you mean.
A franchise could be beneficial to you. Someone setting up in another town could be beneficial to you.
Someone setting up in the same town could be beneficial to you.
With the right individual and good communication it could work for both of you.
Are we on about franchises,  hairdressing or what?
You might as well be talking Urdu  ;D.

My daughter is a self employed mobile hairdresser. For her £125 is a good day and she will have worked 8 hours, kicked her heels until the next job and  like our job there is a bit of driving between and the very nature (not well, dog's sick, kid's sick, Mum's dead, off on hols, don't bother over Xmas, extra work leading up to Xmas etc.) means it is not as well paid due to gaps in work as it should be. She's a bit too conscientious and fussy to make good money with your average Jolene IMO.

I have given her cards to my custies and vice versa with some small success.

It's a game of three halves!

If/when any of my lads have tried to set up on their own I offer any help I can (unless we fell out in which case no hope).

No point burning bridges.

Me and the Mrs own the hair salon she works in, she employs two other girls and they both have their own clients outside of work, normally just friends and family. Its no big deal as long as it doesn't affect the shop, which it never has. She earns very good money and just works 9 til 5, Tuesday to Saturday. If your good at your job it constant repeat business, customers come to you, pay before they leave and 99.99% leave with a big smile on their faces. Not a bad business at all

I read through my thread again and decided to reword it ;)

Most window cleaners moan when a worker wants to setup on their own.

A lot of hairdressers have ambitions to own their own salon, but they still work for a boss.

SO

Should we actually be trying to encourage this instead of wanting to kill them.

I have heard of soooooo many horror stories, window cleaner stealing work then setting up on his own.

The reason i asked is because i purchased a round 2 years ago, which was "stolen/cherry picked" I doubt the chap would have done this if he was given an incentive. IE running a franchise or something.

It doesnt read like it, but i know what i am talking about lol  :P

id never encourage a worker to go on his own-you only then have to train another which takes time and is costly

I would presume doing womens hair makes more money than mens

as some of the prices they pay are mental!! and you know what women are like with there hair think its money well spent... think its a rip off myself  ;D

I think if someone wants to go it alone, they will.  How many with ambitions to go it alone would work for someone in the first place? I mean it's not that hard to set up is it? Success is a different matter.
How many on here started for someone else?  Properly, I mean.

I do know what you mean now, Pure. Staff might stick with it if there are more incentives and prospects.
Or fringe benefits, if you like.

I have had two people over 12 years leave and setup on their own and both failed. But they took work with them :( Seriously looking at other options other than what i do now :)

No point in splitting hairs over it which could lead to a parting.
