in van pole holder
« on: June 29, 2011, 06:03:43 pm »
after getting my new van fiat doblo 1.9 multijet i wanted a proper pole holder, i was forever bashing the roof in my combo so after a trip to b&q to get some wood and guttering i made this up,

had to cut holes in the bulkhead for the 2 poles slx18 and 30 but they fit perfectly.

the pipe is 4 inch sewer and you buy the brackets to hold them i just screwed them up with self tappers. i bought 2X2 meters lengths and 6 brackets for £32.

Does anyone else use the half circle guttering that Scrimble uses

whats better soil pipe or guttering  ???

At the moment i use a soil pipe but need to add another pole holder and was thinking of trying the guttering instead.

Thanks Paul

Soil pipe much better as offers 360' protection. Only use new though as used can be a bit off putting!  :o

SlxII 18 and 30 fit in downpipe.
47' extreme I've just cut a slot out the top of the clamps to poke out of.

Bought a 2m gutter yesterday, 68mm diameter and couldn't see how I was going to fix it to the ceiling.  There are plenty of holes in the Vivaro ceiling (ceiling isn't plylined) so I've bought some long cable ties, will make them tight and see how that goes.  I had to saw off about 20cm to get the gutter to fit but 68mm diameter seems a little snug for the pole and the pole hose to fit down, I probably should've bought a wider one.  And a sanded down both ends of the gutter, don't want sharp edges messing up the pole and the hose, wear and tear is enough as it is.

I'll try and put a photo up.  What I can't work out is how to attach my 6ft pointer to the ceiling (rather in the van than on it for ease of use, I already have a smaller step ladder in van too - if gate is locked (customers forget, it happens) I can quickly put a ladder either side and hop over), Homebase was crap for hooks, but again, there aren't really suitable holes in the ceiling anyway so would have to drill.

Use the proper brackets to secure the down pipe to the roof of the van.
Self tapping screw and a washer then screw into the 'ribs' of the van. Use a battery drill and they go through like a knife through butter. (just not where its double thickness-these places seem harder).
The diameter is fine, you just need to aim where you put the pole hose.
As for the sharp edge, that'll wear away with time, you won't split your hose on it.
If anything, as the hose will always end up kinking in the same spot at the end of the pole in the tube that becomes a weak point and will split there.
Im 6 months in using gardeners hot hose and it still hasn't yet though...

as for the pointer, see if you can find 'pink grip' in a tube like silicone that you use with a gun.
If you pink grip a section of softwood to the bulkhead to create a little shelf for the nose of the pointer to sit in then at the appropriate place in the back pink grip more softwood and 2 big hooks. spin the hooks 90º to 'release' the ladder and back again to secure it.

Did the brackets this morning, worked a treat.  However due to the door rim of the Vivaro being a bigger 'rib' and me not cutting the gutter down enough, I effectively trapped my pole in my van, only finding out once I got to my first job haha.  Managed to gently tease it out, but I'll take the gutter off and cut it down some more so I can hopefully get a better angle on the pole to remove it cleanly.

Is the pink grip stuff similar to No More Nails?  NMN comes in a squeezable bottle, better than having to open a cartridge and only use a little while the rest goes off.  I do have some suitable wood lying around though but anything being stuck to the van has to stay there as the ladder's pretty heavy and liable to break something should the wood come away.

Mine came wrapped in bubble wrap and in a long square/wrap around cardboard box so not an option for me!  How have you attached the tube ot the ceiling, or do you rest it on the floor?

Thought you had a blue custom built tank in your Doblo Scrimble?

Oh, just seen the original date of post.
