Funnily enough, on my father's advice while I was living at home in my late teens in the late 1970's but working, he said save £5 month into an insurance endowment policy for ten years.
The man from the pru came round and upsold me to a 25 year monthly direct debit policy because the government (ol' Jim Callaghan) gave tax relief on that sort of policy. So I paid £4.61 a month and my policy got credited with £5.00.
So this big certificate on card type foolscap paper in a folder comes through telling me that if I died I'd get £1500 (funeral cost plus a bit back then) but that in 2003 the proceeds of said policy, providing all premiums are paid etc blah blah, would land on my mat.
Anyhow I got a cheque for over £8500. All for a £1 a week.
