BEWARE OF SCAM EMAILS
« on: November 05, 2013, 07:33:20 pm »
There is a scam going on at the moment one of my commercial customers got done by it.

You get a email i had one about vat from hmrc ( im not vat registered ) with an attachment when you open the attachment it encrypts all your files and you have to pay the anonymous hacker £200 plus by untrackable money transfer to get the files back.

HRMC state that they NEVER send emails.
I always delete anything to do with tax in an email

It's just the internet. Try not to worry.

I've had a spoof Amazon order email before with an attachment which I presume had I opened it would of been some sort of virus.
I knew I hadn't ordered anything from Amazon at the time so I looked on their website for contact details to ask them about it.
On their website it does mention that if you receive a spoof Amazon email to not open the attachment and just to delete the email without informing them.
So I presume it is quite a common scam.

I get the HMRC one..... About 3 times a day.

I actually opened it and started filling on the details once but this was about 2001 when phishing scams were quite new.

Just delete anything that you are not 100% about and don't let it worry you.
