Adding a 3rd person ?
« on: March 27, 2013, 07:11:37 pm »
How is best to employ a 3rd person ? 2 of us at the moment with enough work but would like someone else. Surely we would have to get the extra work first then employ ? How would we manage for a while with 2 of us with the extra work ?

IMO  you need more work than you can do in your schedule before you consider it, ie if your 4 weekly you need to be running a 6 weekly before you commit to another person.
I presume youre  adding another van as well rather than 3 in 1 van??
Oooooo that is shiny!!

We work three in a van takes a bit of organising and a compact run
but works for us.

We did this in Oct 2011 when we were trad.
We were running so far behind basically it meant when we got another van and employee along with all the associated costs just getting what work we had done every month meant all the costs were paid and we earnt no less.
When the new guy got settled and we were happy with him and he knew what to do and where to go we then canvassed as we had like 7 days a month to fill, we then knew every new job was all in our pocket as the employee and his costs were all accounted for 8)

I would get as much detail about employing as you can get and read it all and do the Maths to make sure its viable, theres a lot to it and its a big step.
Good luck  :)

This is exactly what im doing now, im topping up each day and also saturdays so by te time i get third van ill already have 2 weeks work for it, then proper rapid canvass to build the other 2 weeks and to finish by maxing out all 3. It takes a lot of time and planning to get it right, i am having lots of grief due to doing it in winter/freezing months but i will succeed coz i have the eye of the tiger!!.

if you've enough for two men, you could perhaps take someone on put him with your mate and step out, go full time canvassing and first cleans, you should be making enough profit out of two to pull a semi decent wage topped up by the freshly canvassed/ cleaned work, another thing to consider is you're going to be a lot closer to the vat threshold with 3 men, have you considered this..?
