Two battery's one charger.
« on: February 12, 2013, 03:26:55 pm »
I've got 2 battery's in my van, one for the pumps the other for the drill I use to wind my reels in. Does anyone know if I can use one charger to charge both batteries at the same time if I join the batteries in series, and if I can and leave the batteries joined together, will they run down at the same rate?

Can anyone see any problems with this?

if you connect the properly yes.. there are two ways to do it one way makes it 24v the other way around would make a big 12v battery which is the one you want. cant remember which way its done but it will be online somewere

There is no problem with that. (google images of a Delicia battery set up). You are better off with a proper split charge system though.

If you connect positive to positive and negative to negative it will effectively give you a larger battery at 12v. However make sure that the batteries are both fully charged first. If you connect a discharged battery to a charged battery even just to charge you will probably damage both batteries as the one with less charge will draw power from the one that is charged but at an amperage that the batteries aren't built to handle.

+ to + and - to - and one charger will charge both.

Simon beat me to it, but what he said.
I can remember when waking up stiff in the morning was a good thing.

That's for the replys. I have got a split relay on one battery which helps, but they both need charging after 2 days, so having them connected with save me having to keep swapping the charger about. Good tip about them being charged before connecting Simon. Thanks
