How to insulate pole
« on: January 19, 2013, 11:45:07 pm »
After reading the thread about wfp user getting electrocuted thought about how to insulate the base section of my carbon pole .
Was thinking of buying a glass fibre section but the web site is down . So apart fom being very carful on the 3 jobs that have power lines above what  can you do ?

Self Amalgamating Repair Tape ... If I read it correctly it offers protection of 35kv .... Is that 35000v protection ? ...   Not a perfect solution but if I wrap base section in it , will it be a good idea .

I can't find the link on here ( done search) . Someone suggested heat shrink tube for the Harris pole , which I did do but is it insulation value good , and any one have the link please ?

Next time I buy a pole I will make  sure it has protection .

Any other suggestions ?

Why would you even think about working anywhere near power lines with a metal pole? You can't be that desperate surely.

I have read this thread with interest with interest. They writer has a point as we work around many out side lighting which unbeknown to us they could be faulty. This would be a risk to us as we work. Its not only power lines that present a risk.act  With this fact in mind it would be wise to insulate a Harris pole and any pole that does not have factory fitted insulation.Using insulation tape would do the job as long as the pole was dry. As another precaution rubber gloves would be a good practice to develop.
I have had a outside light fitting spark and trip the customer main box. He called and asked if I had done anything to trip the electric. I told him he needs to sort out his front door light as it got wet and tripped.
As I offered a premium service and used to clean outside lights which could have been fatal.I had dropped this service lately.

Hi Gary , yes that's what I was looking for, I did use it when used Harris poles and it was good , but can't find where to buy it now .

As smittie ( sorry if spelt name wrong , I cant see all the post as I reply ) . As he says , regardless of over head power lines , more customers are adding wiring to the outside of the house , so even if I give up the 3 with near by power lines I still want a insulated base section

Ps I don't use Harris now , it's a full carbon .

Can't recall who said "look up " .... Thanks for the tip  ;). I am trying to learn to have one eye up and one eye down , to avoid trip hazards . .......am going bog eyed !

I look like this now  ::)
