My personal opinion is that that 2.0 hdi is the engine to have.
I don't like the 1.6 hdi, but it is lighter, and weight saving goes toward payload gains. It first came out in the Picasso, replacing the 2.0 hdi 90hp. They Turbo boosted it to 110hp in third gear which did nothing for me.
Judging by the service requirements and turbo failure due to lubrication problems, I would tread carefully with the 1.6.
But manufacturers have to keep up with the Euro emission requirements, but just how far can they go without making the technology unreliable? Why have Toyota stopped the Hiace? Because it's diesels won't meet the new eu emissions standards. Toyota makes a good petrol engine, but petrol vans are a non starter in the UK.
PSA are in a dire financial way, with the French Government refusing anymore financial bailouts. R&D will be the first to be cut back, so I can see a lobby at EU level to put off Euro 6 introduction on 1 September 2014. The future of the diesel engine in Europe is uncertain and PSA feels the only way to met Euro 6 is using Ad Blue additive as some lorries do now with a more sophisticated exhaust system.
