Advice needed regarding WFP and the cold weather please
« on: December 12, 2012, 03:44:06 pm »
I have been finding it hard to get work done in this weather not starting till 10:30 11:00 and then i still need to be finished by 2:30 to pick up the kids i have a few questions

What time do you start work  ??? ???

What is the lowest temp you work in  ??? ???

Do you do the job if their is a frost on the customers drive  ??? ???

I have gone to a few jobs today and their drives were frosted up and i don't want to make is worse or get some one trying to make a claim due to water freezing on the floor.

I have been to asda and bought some table salt for tomorrow

Thanks Paul

Ps hot system for next year should help  ;D ;D

We use a hot system which keeps us going but actually freezes quicker than cold water.
As a rule we don't do front doors at all. Or anywhere the rain can't fall, like under a carport or such.
Leave a clear run to where their car is parked.
Claim wise-if you only leave water where rain would do the same I think they'd have a hard time claiming as you could argue that it never thawed from overnight frost.
I'm not a lawyer or anything-that's just my opinion.
Table salt won't do anything at all.
If you are going to salt (we don't bother) get a bag of rock salt. £6odd for 25kg.

8.30 'till dark. Minus four this morning no problems. Salted areas when needed. If you don't try and work then you'll be stuffed Friday anyway when the rain and wind comes.

I started today at about 9.00 chuffing cold day and had my hose/pole freeze but still did 60 pounds
if i had stayed at home or dident work if it was icey i would never earn any money, unless your going miles and miles to work its work going out and trying. Just take care of yourself in the cold and you will be fine. ;D

I agree with frank thus is what I've been doin
Thisweek got to -4 so didn't start till 10 am today
Take a brush out and get shut of the water on the
Ground before it freezes

I think  20% down on takings but still earning a living
And I no that every job I leave is safe and ice free

keep it simple

Started at 7:30 on a factory, it was -6C then did residential from 8:30 - 2:30. It only went above freezing about midday.  We rock salted key area's, the water started to freeze on only a handful of windows but then the hot water melted it away.  Even the windows that started to freeze didn't refreeze once cleaned, because the glass had been warmed.

I've heard of the hot water freezing faster than cold water stories, but to be honest I think in most real world situations thats a load of rubbish, hot water will get the job done in temperatures down to -10C from my experience. No broken panes either, not at the speed I was working in order to keep warm.

Simon.

Not stopped all week so far started at 9.00 finish at 4.00, carry rock salt and sprinkle accordingly and warn customer of potential freezing, its has been -1 nearly all day. I stop when it freezes on the glass.

We have been working down to -6 this week, we don't do around doors with wfp just a dry scrim in this weather.

Turn pressure down, you will be suprised how little water you need.

We don't spread salt or grit, I have been told that if we do and someone slips we can be held liabile.

Blimey I was told to do that as a preventative measure, Health and Safety course I attended.

Starting later finishing earlier, but showa gloves and immersion keep hands warm and hoses supple.

Salting and sweeping away standing water on paths.

Scrimming or blading certain doors.

Earning about two-thirds but covering wages and fuel.

If I had not had the immersion I would not have worked much this week.
It's a game of three halves!

Erith you are in the wrong business if you cant make the best of things ,  It is a case of mind over matter other wise you will end up miles behind and skint .

I dont get custys rushing out of house to clear black ice and frost for me to work on their property so i dont put salt down on all custys mostly at old folks houses and were i think it is needed as every house is different . Get some proper grit/ salt not table salt .

Worked in temps of -3 all day yesterday started at 7:30 am had to trad  first commercial as it froze up because of no heating in building  ice everywhere and snow this morning +3 had a sweat on .

Finished off today with a nice inside clean for an old lady who has secondry glazed units . Mike
