Merlin v Rain water?
« on: November 09, 2012, 07:40:26 pm »
I use a Merlin to filter my water but before I changed my resin yesterday I did a check with tds meter. The reading from Merlin before di was 40 which used to be about 20!! Anyway I then checked rainwater which was 20!! I've had Merlin for 3 years but never changed the filters so will this be the reason why tds has risen?

Merlins are proper poop.....they bring tds down to a level where you 100% need resin afterwards.

a good 6 stage ro is money better spent..... i have had water at 250 tds.... brought down to 0.02 with a good ro-man ....
without resin.
half the price of the over rated merlins..

Merlins are fine if you have a high enough water pressure AND a high enough volume of water.

At 500 feet above seal level and with a booster pump to around 55-65 psi I had incoming at 140 tds and product at 28 tds.
At near enough sea level, same booster pump to around 65-75 psi my mate had incoming at 311 tds and product at 11 tds.

They are a bit fussy about temperature too but as they really all that were available 8 years ago when we set up, they did very well.

I'm now mostly on rainwater at 18-25 tds with the merlin as back up for dry weather.

Works well.

What do you use to filter your rainwater? From the downpipe to your tank.

I have the downpipe cut into the top of an IBC with a ridge around the gutter fixing - this stops any larger bits entering the IBC. Between the first and second IBC I have a standard half inch hose filter which catches the rest and then between the second and third IBC a DI unit.

Only issue I have at the moment is Chlorophyll from the leaves in the gutter colouring the water slightly.
As long as the gutter is kept of free of leaves there is no problem and my next job is to do some hedge trimming.
Aside from that it all works very well and even with moderate rainfall I very rarely need the Merlin.
