Pump issues!!
« on: November 02, 2012, 05:27:48 pm »
Evening all

Had a problem with my pump today. When switching off my tap the pump kept ticking over rather than shutting off. (its like a hollow ticking over, as if its trying to pump with no water running through)Usually when shutting the tap off i get 'de' on my flow controller and when switch it back on it flows as normal....
I messed around with the calibration and worked fine for a few houses, but then did it again!!!
I have a flojet 100psi and use a liquid logic flow controller.
Any suggestions much appreciated??

Cheers

It sounds to me as if the pump is pulsing while in DE. which is what we would expect to see.

When you turn the tap off the controller detects the stopped flow and shuts down the pump. Normal operation for the controller while in DE is to re test for restored flow approx every 3 seconds. As this happens the pump will pulse ( Tick ) for a fraction of a second.
This will continue to happen until the flow is restored.

The control and pump appear to be working as designed.

While in DE the pressure in your system builds very slightly the longer the pump is in DE the higher the pressure and the more noticeable the Tick will be. The controller needs some pressure to carry out the DE retest.

Also be aware that if the temperature is much lower this effects hose expansion and water viscosity ( How fast the water flows ) These can lead to the pump working a little harder and again will have an effect while in DE

Do you use the auto cal feature on the liquid logic?

Yeah i use the auto calibration, but not on my longest pole (which the video suggests) so thanks for that :)
As regards to the pulsating, it does usually pulsate in de mode (i think most do) but this is continuos. It will show de and pulsate, but then it will suddenly change and the controller shows that the pump is pumping (de is not on the display anymore) the tap is still off, and the pump had shut down then the pump start up with its hollow noise....

Thanks for the help

Thanks for the feed back
Can I ask how long is the the system left in DE? How old is the controller & Pump? Is this effect happening when you have a full run of hose? 100M. Lastly have you a pressure switch fitted?

The controllers are designed to manage pressure while in DE. The pressure is built up slightly while in DE I am wondering as this is a recent change if it is just the change in air temp or if something else is causing a slight lag

Glad the video helped. There should be more of these very soon.

will your remote pump controller, work on a gardiners back pack ?

Thanks

The pump and controller are around 9 months old. Its only really in DE mode inbetween windows or from one house to the next. I usually switch the controller off if i have to move the van. It happens through the hose reel (100m) but i also disconected the reel so the pump was only pumping through around 4m of hose but it still happened. I bypassed my d.i vessel as i thought  that it maybe that but it still happened.
When i disconnected the hose reel it did work ok after i had switched the controller off and on again....
Maybe something to do with the calibration as suggested, but i'll not know for definate untill i get out working tomorrow!!!

Cheers

In short yes.  Are you thinking about the stand alone retro fit remote? Or a full controller?

The Stand alone would have to be connected between a control and the pump. and would give you the option to turn the pump on/off. The unit will operate with a 12V relay switch.
