Stain removal - here's a challenge
« on: October 29, 2012, 05:03:25 pm »
I cleaned a 6sqm wool off-white shag pile rug at the weekend.  It had been abused by the cat and dog and smelt really bad. I pre-warned the customer I was going to hit it hard with my HWE systems. It was a pig to dry!

Anyway, the customer was very pleased when I returned it today.  But there was one stain I could not remove properly - it was a grass stain, from partially digested grass that had been through the dog!  I tried everything I had, apart from bleach.

I'm back there is a few weeks to clean the rest of the house - but if I knew how to remove that digested grass stain I'd do it while I was there....  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi David
You might find that the acid from the bile has made that mark permanent, are you getting any transfer at all onto a cloth? You could try adding some heat ie stain remover, terry towel and then an iron
Good luck

Hi David, you might consider either of these methods:

1. Apply Citrus Gel and rinse with hot water.
2. Apply Stain Pro and allow to stand for 2-5 minutes.
3. Rinse thoroughly with water and blot until dry.

(From Prochem stain removal guide).

Alternatively:
Grass Stain contains: Tannin, acids, oils and chlorophyll.

1. Apply P.O.G (if available) to remove chlorophyll.
2. Apply Liquid Enzyme Spotter detergent and blot.
3. Rinse with water and blot.
4. Apply Alkaline Spotter solution and blot.
5. Apply Acid Solution Spotter and blot.
6. Rinse with water, blot until dry.
7. Remaining green mark may need and application of Dye Gone or Spray & Go to remove it.

(From Chemspec spotting guide).

Remember other spotters are available too. ;) ;)

Hope this helps.

Jim

As I took this rug off-site, and had all day Sunday to play with it, I tried all the above.
I resisted the bleach method though.  Maybe I'll try it.

Like I have said, acid bile has effectively set the stain in

I'd forgotten about the Prochem stain removal guide - I've just dug it out, printed it off, laminated it and put it on the van.  Tnx Timmy.

Just one last throw of the dice maybe, have you tried oxibrite, it works for me sometimes but only tends to take out more of a shadow than an actual stain. Worth a try though!
