Araldite works or heat the plastic ring over a gas hob and when melted stick the mesh part back on. By the way these are Hydraulic Oil take up filters like whats in the tank of a JCB etc. Any good hydraulics supplier will be able to get them for around 25-35 quid.

Cheers for the all tips. Oil filter wrench didn't work, next is Craigs plywood idea!

An oil filter wrench will work.

Its a strap wrench I've got - couldn't get it off. Perhaps a chain type would be better, just nervous about damaging the plastic.

Got it off with a proper oil filter wrench from my mates garage. Phew!  :)
