bought a van? check the tyres

Bought a cheap second hand van, looked alright, tyres ok etc.

One of the tyres was a car tyre! Not rated for commercial use so has a smaller load rating, had it blown out and caused a crash I would be liable, possibly for manslaughter. The tyre looked identical to the others. The way to tell is look for the telltale letter C it should have. IE 185/65/R14C
Lugging 500litres of water around I was asking for trouble.

The tyre walls are thicker I think, I always go for Continentals.

I bet loads of windies are running vans on car tyres.  Many years ago, I was a courier and I was always being told I was wasting my cash having van tyres on.  I'm sure some on here will be the same.

I have checked on lots of tyre websites with my van reg, it always comes up with peug expert panel van and the tyres required, and they are not c rated, I have been stopped and checked by traffic police and they have never mentioned the c rating and they were pretty severe on their checks

are you sure it doesn't only apply to larger vans

Don't know anything about the "c" but I always put reinforced tyres on the van.

When I ran my Doblo with 400L I always bought reinforced tyres. But if I was delivering crisps or flowers then I see no need.

My current - bigger - van is so obviously a "commercial van" that there is (quite rightly) little choice in the matter.

Well this was at National Tyres.
I would imagine it depends on your load. With a full tank and all my gear I must be carting 650-700kg around, and then theres me. :-[ I'm a few kilos. My van is a scudo 815kg max load, that of course includes driver
I think it's one of those cases that if you had a crash cos of your tyre blowing they would look a lot closer...
the idea of being prosecuted bothers me less than the idea of wiping out someone's family on the motorway.

no you got the C bit correct, c of commercial use, but a vehicle has a payload and the tyre recommended has to be able to take that payload, c is better but nothing wrong with a lower rating unless someone can tell me otherwise, and you can have a blowout with a C rated tyre just the same as a T rated tyre, just slow down stick on hazards and go to hard shoulder

my brother agrees with you totally and I hope someone can prove me wrong and prove it, then I will replace all my tyres but until then T will do for me

I am sure though that C is for larger vans like transits and bigger

About 2 or 3 years back I had a blow out and put the spare on. I got a replacement tyre at a garage as the one that had blown was almost shredded in places. What ever it was I gone over on the motorway done the tyre in completely.

My van failed the mot about a month later because the tyre was the wrong type for my transit connect. The bloke said I needed a 'van' tyre, what ever that is.

£30 later, it passed the mot next day.

  It is entirely conceivable that I could easily carry 5 people in my car that would weigh in the same as my van loaded up.

  Do I need to change my tyres on the car for this eventuality?

  I run car tyres on my Berlingo, not only that I go down the scrappy and buy them at a tenner a piece, the ones on the front are a different profile height to the rear, it passed the MOT with no problems and drives/steers and stops just fine.

  Some people are just the ticket for spending more money at these places.

Your van will have an axle weight plate somewhere, you should use the correct weight rated tyre accordingly, have a look here...http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/load-and-speed-indexes-advice.html

well if your van has an average payload of 600kg, minus your weight I bet the amount left wouldnt be the weight of four large aduldts, which is wht a normal car would carry. Once you get into the realm of 1000kg and over thats different, but below that I wouldnt bother
