Gutter Cleaning
« on: January 28, 2006, 10:18:23 pm »
Does anyone have any experience and tips for cleaning gutters.

I've got some general ideas but any advice would be great.

Thanks.

Hi mate

Presume by gutter cleaning you mean cleaning out the debris from standard house plastic gutterings.
I have done quite afew guttering cleaning jobs for my window cleaning customers. I have found the best way for me is to get up the ladders and use a gutter cleaning tool (it looks like a small scoop and will fit on the end of a standard pole. cost about £6 from soap national) scrape as much crap towards me from both directions as i can and put it in a bucket that i hang next to me at the top of the ladder. you can also use a small handbrush to do the same. i then just wipe the outside of the plastic gutter with a damp cloth to tidy it up so from the ground it looks like i have done something.
For guttering over porches / conservatories etc fit your gutter cleaning tool to a pole to get the extra reach you need, can sometimes be awkward scraping long distances depending on how much the tiles hang over the guttering.
a avarage house that needs doing will give you around a bucket and half of crap.
I have seen people advertising guttering cleaning with an extended pressure washing lance with special bit on the end and do it from ground level, but where does the crap go when you turn that on, if it doesn't go down the fall pipe and block it up it must everywher else, operater included. Apoligies to anyone that does this if this is not the way it works.

Pricing
depends what your happy earning an hour, how high the guttering is, how much pole work do you have to do and how badly clogged up they are.
I only do guttering cleans when i have any extra time on my hands. Average 4 bed detatched takes a couple of hours so i charge around £50 (derbyshire prices), if they are not one of my exisisting customers i put another £10 on that and they seem happy.Hope this is of some help

Have done one or two jobs as part of contract.  Bungalow type height so done off steps using drain rod and half drop scraper plus builders bucket 4 debris.

I do a fair ammount of gutter cleaning.
I used to use a pressure washer with extendible lance but due to only having a small van have gone back to ladders.

Like tony said you can get a scoop attachment for a pole which is very good.
You can also get a set of drain rods from B&Q or wickes for about £18 and they have a half moon attachment in there for gutter cleaning just put on a drain rod and push along gutter as far as possible and pull towards you and put in a bucket.
I have a hook on my bucket to hook onto ladder

It can be a really messy and smelly job so wear old clothes and a pair of gloves.
I then wash the underside of gutter with WFP but i used to clean the underside with a cloth and a spray bottle with a bit of flash in.

I charge £20 - £25 a side and and extra £10 a side for facias
