to clean in the rain or not
« on: October 03, 2012, 06:13:59 pm »
i know a lot on here say no problem to clean in rain, i cleaned today and there was some heavy showers. just had a text saying the front of the house looks all marked. told them i will go back tomorow and clean them again. all i can think is one of the heavy showers was directly on the front of the house. been window cleaning four years now and this my second call back beacause of working in the rain. not too bad i suppose but does make you worry a little about working in rain. but got no choice really as it seems to rain every day lately. ::)

Never had a problem , even if it has poured down after their should not be marked unless of course they have climbing plants around windows which causes problems , or if they have a porch with a flat roof which sends muck flying everywhere when it pours down,  Mike

When you cleaned the windows, did you remove the previous months dirt?

If so, the fact that the windows then got dirty 4 seconds after you cleaned them as opposed to 4 minutes after or 4 days after is irrelevant............ In an ideal world.

Personally I don't clean in the rain but if I go WFP I will give it a try.

it is a regular clean only thing i can think it is a bay on the bottom window and the rain has come down off this and on to the glass. will take a look tomorow and put it right. not nice being called back but the custie is fine about.

Where the windows opened.
Rain can run down the walls collecting dirt and drip on to a opened window
below.
Also in heavy wind rain will run down the wall and be blown against
the window below.

Rain has a near zero TDS, so yes. Working in the rain would depend on how hard and windy it is and where you draw the line at getting wet. Can not clean the windows in the rain is a myth that customers believe in. Perry covers this subject briefly and explains where this myth came from in October 2012 issue of WCM, see the Myth Buster feature .....

lets be honest here lads.if you have a decent size customer base you HAVE to work in the rain sometimes or you get too far behind and lose money.

WFP makes working in rain a breeze compared to slogging it out trad with a ladder.

i very rarely get a "not today" when working in rain.if i do they get missed until next month.

my customers are used to it now.just make sure you have good waterproof clothing, boots and gloves(eg goretex).

if its prolonged torrential rain(like tuesday afternoon)i sack it for the day.luckily its very rare that we get hard rain ALL day so there usually is time to nibble away at a few hours work even on bad days.

Went and recleaned was only the bay window so must have been water running off the top of the bay. So i suppose rain was not the cause directly which is just as well cause i am way behind and need to work in it.  :'(

Respect dazmond i am finding it hard to keep up to date and only got about 280 custies. Just had a week in benidorm though. Think i am a bit disorganised though to be honest. my work is all over the place. Not doing too bad money wise, as i was a bricklayer and i am better off than my ex work mates. Been hard work building it up to what ive got but this site has been a great help. Always find your posts worth a read dazmond.

Trouble is i was trad for 21 years, and never hardly cleaned when raining, now im on the pole im trying to educate my customers this last 2 years that when it rains because im using pure water there will be no residue on windows, so they will still be clean, some, not many are ok about it ( but i tend to still hang back if its raining in morning)  john.

This last three days have been heavy stormy cr@p weather, although all year, all we've lost to bad weather was about seven or eight days. Light rain or shower dodging is no problem. I'd hate to have no room for problems though. It must be really hard for some people who can't miss the odd couple of days etc.

I've build my work up over years to be priced OK IMO. If I have a week off for hols or a storm closes us down for a week etc I can still be safe as far as money goes. The bad winters that you got in UK in 2009 and 2010 caused alot of problems, but here in Boxhead land, we get minus 15 to minus 20 as normal in January and February.

We work trad only here, and when we have those types of temps and snow on the ground, we trad downstairs and leave upstairs out and charge accordingly.

I got that Idea off Dazmond. I used to second guess customers and thought it would cause problems to clean in the rain. Now I just crack on as long as I'm not getting too wet. As I said, light rain and the odd shower don't bother me. Never had a problem with customers since we started to work in rain, so it's all good I suppose.
No still don't understand, I must be thick
