Preparing water tank/hose etc for winter..
« on: August 22, 2012, 10:13:36 am »
I'm getting concerned about how to set my water tank at home so I can try and get through the winter without it all freezing up! I have the tank currently standing on its own (no shed) about 5m from the tap. I also have a garage in a compound by my house but that would mean running the hose about 15-20m, something I'm not sure would be a smart idea due to freezing. So I'm weighing up a new shed where the tank is already or moving it to the garage. Any ideas folks? Cheers

Armaflex hose insulation EBAY -plus oil filled rad in (insulated) shed. Dont think water freezes whilst its flowing, just when it stops?

Put tank inside somewhere and wrap in in a hot water boiler jacket or 2.get some hose insulation and put hose in the foam stuff.you could wrap some tape around it to make sure its in there well.
Also if you got electric where tank is put an immersion heater in tank.
Do a search on here loads of threads on it.

Should be safe then mate.

the only thing different i do in winter is stick a oil filled radiator in the back of van on freezing nights and carry some salt/grit with me in the van.

oh and if its really cold i take a separate flask of hot water for unfreezing the jets on my brush if needed!!

my DI also gets taken in my flat on cold nights.

THATS IT!!

it keeps me working 95% of the time in cold weather!! ;) ;D ;D ;D
price higher/work harder!

Build a little shed/cupboard round your tank (put it on breeze blocks about 600/750mm off the ground) and insulate it with celotex type stuff. Put an oil filled radiator in underneath and you will have no probs.

I did this - in the last three winters and all that - minus 10 degrees - no probs.

Put an immersion in the bottom if you want warm water - or in your van tank.
It's a game of three halves!

Wow some great tips fellas, after many years on the ladder I actually thought this was going to be the first winter I might actually enjoy the job! So much to do/learn! Cheers  :)

Set fire to your garage, but keep it from actually destroying any kit.

Tricky, but not impossible.

Be handy if water melts quick enough to put the fire out though, as much as I dislike my neighbours I wouldn't want to torch all 10 garages.
