Safest way to raise / extend a pole
« on: August 23, 2012, 08:33:52 am »
Hi
Know might sound like a daft question but I may have to demonstrate my method.
Extend the pole laid out on the ground at right angles to the building.
With the base against the building.
Start at the thin brush end and raise hand over hand until vertical?
Or
Start with pole collapsed and vertical and gradually extend section by section until required height is reached? (which is what I guess most do but will it satisfy H&S)
Or
Start with the pole extended at right angles to the building stand sideways to the pole and holding at the base end swing the pole vertical?
thanks
Granny

depends on how heavy the pole is I suppose and whether you would be putting strain on your back lifting it extended from horizontal on the ground ?
I usually open a couple of sections on ground, lift and lean against building on the gooseneck and extend to desired height from there.

Ever thought of going into stand up?

Seriously though I have been asked to provide a "site visit" for the Facilities manager and his contracts manager.
Don't really know what to expect - but I think they may want to see how I operate obviously with the Risk Assess. / Method Stat. and Health and Safety.
Compliance rules it seems.

Let's assume that the top window is at 25ft.

Stand about 12ft from the building and hold the pole upright. Extend straight upwards clamping each section at the limit indicator as you go. Look behind you lift the pole to waist height so it is on the window.

When collapsing get closer to the building pull off the window and reverse the above.

If talking it through go on about lifting vertically puts less strain on the body and that you are careful in windy conditions and don't work in lightning blah blah elfnsafety hiviz wochowt for forktrucks yawn.
It's a game of three halves!
