Gutter Vac Question
« on: July 05, 2012, 12:03:21 pm »
I;ve just bought myself a gutter vac 2nd hand and it hasnt got a camera or mirror on it.  for low level gutter cleaning on domestics can you do a good job without the mirror or cam, or do you need one?

personally i like to double check the gutter with a camera after most jobs but with experience you can tell whether you
have cleared it or not. dont see why a mirror wont work as well.

You can get away without one I think, but it's the piece of mind option for me. The quality of the cam I have is great, but using it is a pain. I'm looking into changing it for a wireless smaller one. It's a little top heavy and awkward to handle.

I've been using it by attaching it to a window pole and doing a little research before starting, much easier.

so would you guys then do the cleaning without a cam, but use the cam to check your work afterwards?

i've been recommended www.dogcam.co.uk for a cam as the seller said the omnipole cam wasnt any good.

http://www.spycameracctv.com/

get a wireless bird box camera + a lcd screen display - total cost £140 ( may be cheaper if you ask

then buy a fibreglass 15 meter flagpole - £35.00 - all done - just cut a slot in the first section for the camera bracket
to slot into and tape the 9v batt underneath

the flagpole is a tapred telescopic and lightweight and you can see a good 20 ft in each direction from the gutter centre and can look down into swannecks

We've found the mirror ok Ben. When we got our VAC from Nick we tried to order a cam for it, he said the mirror will be fine if its not then i'll sell you a cam. The main problem i found with the mirror is knocking it off and cracking it!! So make sure its on secure. Granted you don;t get an in depth view like a cam provides but you can certainley see if they are clear (most of the time!!  ;D  ).

hi mike,

do you have the mirror attached to the vac so you can use it as you're cleaning, or do you have it on a separate pole so you can check things?

thanks

I have a camera and screen so I can inspect the high stuff but rarely use it. After a while you get the feel of it and generally know when it's clear. On domestic work I normally get the ladders out anyway because I'll put my wfp up and send water down the s bend to make sure it's clear. If it's blocked then the pipe will need dismantling at the top anyway. The vac nozzle just wont reach deep enough to suck out the mud and roots despite what people on here tell you. Easy to knock a cap off the end and knock a clip undone on a joint - so ladders are never far away.

Also, I've done jobs at fifty feet with no problems, however I don't go looking for this kind of work because you have no way of unblocking downpipes or replacing any damaged sections that can happen whilst working.

RE; Omni Cam.

The Omni pole camera is good for image clarity and recording is fine, It's the handling it, if the cam comes with the set-up make use of it first to see.
