« on: June 08, 2012, 06:14:42 pm »
 ;D ;D ;D

massive house for my round anyway,

went to quote a house today and was shocked how many windows it had compared to all my other work just wondering what people would charge they wernt in at the time but iv got to ring them later,

it had 37 windows varying in size some big some small and little porch??

i was thinking £40 every 2 months, maybe £50 3 monthly not sure what the frequency they want yet as i spoke to someone who doesnt own the house plus they want inside done i think dont fancy that but again i thought £60 insides

Insides double the outsides (regular price) and the first clean (outside) double the regular
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

Got a phone call from a chap 4 months ago asking me to go around and give him a price told me his address was flat 7 and to ring bell on intercom when I got there.

Did as asked and whilst waiting was trying to guess which windows were his as had 12 flats over 2 buildings ... so he comes out and i says which windows are yours then ??

Why do you need to know that he asks with a funny look on his face.

errrr so i can give you a price for your windows  :-\ :-\

no mate he says I want price for all of em as I look after the maintenance for the management committee

Well happy when I got that contract !!

Whatever you do DO NOT give thm the price over the phone, you have to be there to sell it to them and seal the deal. Its all about selling yourself and making the job yours, over the phone that isnt likely to happen; you're leaving yourself open to them umming, it's at that point they consider a second quote.

never undersell yourself ... work out a price and double it ... good starting point for a price negotiation .... the other way round if someone offering a price make your first bid half the amount .... know your price ... if its not happening do your fellow tadesmen and profession  a favour and walk away ... that way we all stay solvent

this working out a price then doubling it is not good in the long term-sure they might bite the first clean but later theyll realize, hang on we are paying out a lot for this arent we ,then theyll cancel once theyv chewed it over

every biz is different and has their own ways to price up,nothing is right or wrong

i prefer to have a price per window whether its inside or out and i rarely get a canceller ,never over price anyway

jackal-dyou work alone trad . the trouble with working alone is that on a big job like that it can drain you for the rest of the day .
once i started employing   with more hands making light work ,that sort of job becomes  an absolute joy instead of something to groan at each time.

i did a big old vicarage on my own trad for 3 yrs and never even counted the windows as there was too many! how i never fell i will never know as my titchy ladder couldnt reach the upstairs properly. +the owner used to give me whiskey which i drank on an empty stomach !
these days its a breeze with helpers and no whiskey!
we passed by it yest and part of me really wanted to be dropped off by the van and see if id still got it in me to go do it alone
(the lads were all for it !)

any of you boys doing big places alone  know what its like- 3/4 of the way thru your strengths going but you must finish to get the money  (administer the whiskey kick at that point ?)

one of my lads said to me as he pointed at the vicarage  "Oh its not too bad,WE beat it  dont we "

i replied, "you dont beat that place,it lets you win "

I know how you feel - Dan the Man and I are doing a building cladding clean using wfp, tap water and TFR and I'm fitting it in with my other work and working weekends.

The longest side is 100 paces by an average of 25ft high. The shortest two sides are 65 paces x 20ft. Then there is a 40 x 20 out building, a gatehouse an airconditioning/boiler room "shed" - all clad in the same stuff.

We're currently three quarters of the way round the main building and beginning to see an end to it.

On the jubilee Monday there's me - Dan the Man, my daughter, my daughter's boyfriend all sat eating fish and chips, boiling tea on a camping stove having just completed the "long side" and I'm wondering if I've bitten off more than I can chew.

But now we're in the rhythm and can see an end to it ... and it's been useful in the heavier rain to keep me and Dan out of mischief!
It's a game of three halves!
