Squadron Leader window cleaner today.
« on: May 23, 2012, 06:45:34 pm »
Working away this morning on a house in the countryside and could hear a large aeroplane approaching so looked skywards and could see a large RAF plane approaching very very low ... looked like a C130 with the refuelling thingy at the side of the cockpit (seen one on TV whilst watching the flypast for the queen)

I rekoned it was at about 500 foot and as Im looking at him he dipped his wing at me !!  :o :o :o

Well chuffed !!

Only later did I realise I was standing there with my hand up to my head to sheild my eyes from the sun it looked like I was giving him a long salute and he was saluting back.

Perhaps he was coming here to watch the 2 Euro fighters that have been chasing each other all over the skies above me all afternoon.

I thought we were cutting back on spending, yet everytime the sun comes out it is like an audition for Top Gun around here, the noise is extremely loud and really gets on my nerves all afternoon.

They've been flying across the Dorset / Devon border at ridiculously low altitudes since the early eighties.  Back in '81 they'd fly over 10 or more at a time and lower than our house, we live on a hill, but you see the crew and wave to them and sometimes they'd wave back. Been tailing off and now the most I see is 2 at a time - probably the cut backs. The look very cool and sound really laid back.

I was driving up the M6 a good few years ago, sunny day and sunroof open. I heard an enormous roar and at first thought it was a large engined bike about to crash into the back of me but then a "fighter jet" {no idea what} flew directly overhead and no joke, it looked like it was about twenty feet of the ground  :o

We have had a couple of Tornados in Northolt for the past couple of weeks. They are going to be there till the Olympics afre finished. Some of my round is right underneath the flight path a few hundred yds from the runway. Its great to see them taking off or coming in and so low! The noise is fantastic

My old man has a Cottage in mid Wales, when I was a kid every Wednesday two or more jets would fly overhead and dip their wings at us waving, they were so low over the tree line you could easily make out the huge grins on their faces.

The old Hercules used to fly over so slowly we always thought it would drop out of the sky.

Happy days.

I miss the planes a bit, cornwall is wall to wall helicopters.

When I was a kid, the a10 tankbusters used our school chimney as a marker. Double maths is a joy when the whole room is shaking and the teacher starts to panic.

in chepstow I worked on a garden that overlooked the wye, the troops would come down the m4 and turn right for the brecons. We would see whole flights of hurcules going by, belly up round the bends in the river. Chinooks were better, cause you could hear them coming from miles away.

if it is dirty it is fair game

The Eurofighters have been back again today, first off they were loaded up and must have been doing runs onto the bombing range, then they seemed to be practicing flying very slowly in big circles.

At one point they were making so much noise I missed half of the Archers >:(

The A10 Tankbusters used to fly right over our house on their run in to the range on the wash, very low and noisy.

when i were a lad,our house was under the flight path for RAF Manston-back when the yanks used to have it
I used to watch in childlike awe at the F111's(the ones that bombed tripoli when Gadaffi was still head honcho),A10's and F4(phantoms)going over
They also used to fly the vulcans over-it was the only runway outside of london that could handle concorde too(apparently)
Happy,happy days :)
