The softener resin bottle goes before all the filters, that way it helps protects all of the filters.

What you need to do though, is flush the softening resin once a week with softening salt, but you need to disconnect the softening bottle from the rest of the system because the softening salt will destroy you ro membrane.

Is your 4040 a hf4 or hf5?
I was told by June at gaps if using a booster pump could reduce the longevity of a hf5
She also said a water softener might increase the lifespan of a membrane but was outweighed by the cost and over ball ache of maintaining one - So basically not really worth the effort

water softners are 100% a ball ache

A water softener will not increase water production.

I've never said it will increase water production-I said it might increase the longevity/lifespan of the membrane

I was told if using a booster pump with a hf5 you may decrease the lifespan

I've made no mention of water production

I didn't say you did, the comment wasn't directed at you, poolebay sounded like he thought it might increase production.  :)

Hi all
we run our system like this;
1)water in from mains-normal pressure but high tds, nearly 300
2)through Harveys water softner-that way the house is getting lovely water too(the Harveys rep{one of my customers BTW} installed a system that can cope with the demand we place upon it,as they installed one at the local McD's)
3)Boosted through to R/O-supplied by streamline
4)R/O system from streamline(2 x membranes and 3stage filtration)
5)Large DI -robbed of our Brodex 650

1000 ltrs per day,no problem and very, very consistent low tds(never higher than 001)
haven't changed a membrane in 10 months but filters every 3.No resin change in over 6 months
We monitor every day and its all good

Hope that helps

regards
Roy

hf5 are low pressure membranes are'nt they then that would explain it

my tds is around 330 to 380 and kills the ro filters, like i said im on my second one.i back wash every time i use it for around 30 mins on a back wash .iv got no water softner on it at all but june at gaps said with tds like that she said i should get one. its a ro/man system so i dont no what they use ie make of ro's. we bought a ro/man system 4 years ago and that is still running. but this new one we have is just a waste of money.i cant buy a new ro from ro/man as they dont seem to work i was told to use the low ro's from gaps as they are good we had to buy a second ro system as we split the work and work on are own now but i just dont seem to get any luck at mo with this my readings coming out of ro is around 50

I would be looking at the ro not the tds thats quite low compared to mind at around 500 just under, how often you changing the prefilters and whats the waste to pure as 50 seem massively high, i get about 13 on 50/50 waste to pure without a softner, I do have one but it was a royal pain in the ass and made very little difference. if you do end up getting one get one secondhand all it is is a resin vessal from of softener resin, a filter housing to was in the salt.

when you put on your prefilters from new to you flush them first without them connected to the ro ? and the carbon one can shoot that in the ro which will damage it, apart from that made I can't see why your having this problem.

My tds is 375, and my membrane is coming up to 2 years old, and is still producing water at the same tds that it did when it was new.
