Drought 2012 (BBC2 7:30pm Tonight)
« on: May 02, 2012, 07:08:43 pm »
For those that are interested.

"investigation into why the north west is not facing the same drought measures as the rest of the uk and why the drought occurred in the first place".

Think I'll sky+ it as I fancy watching Bolton v Spurs instead.

I watched this last night, they reckon were in our second dry winter(not sure if regions vary),but if we go through a third dry winter, drastic measures could be taken if water levels continue to decline,at one point a guy was saying that households could have there water supplies cut off and standpipes put up in streets, you would have to take water by bucket for what you needed for your daily use, this is of course if it got that bad.

Although there was someone on there from government saying they did have backup plans in place, but no one knows how effective this would be,as we have never gone through a third dry winter.

Spain have built a giant filtering plant, and suck water from the sea as a backup measure.

Personaly I think when they build any new housing they should put in rain water tanks as standard, and also the government should do some form of subsidised scheme to install them om existing properties.

Regards Brian.

Interesting to watch the transition from "DROUGHT! HOSEPIPE BAN" news story overkill all over breakfast tv to the current agenda..................."FLOOD WATCH!".  ;D

I do a house on a new estate where that has been done.

The interesting part was where they said the rain was coming 'at the wrong time of year'.

Anyone with more than two brain cells ought to be able to work out that if the rain comes when it can't percolate through to the aquifers, then there has to be another way to collect and store it.

Instead of allowing foreign interests to acquire our utilities then milk them for everything they can, we should make it law that all utilities must be owned by British interests, and that those owners must reinvest profits to exploit the resources when they are available.

In other words - BUILD MORE RESERVOIRS SO THEY CAN SAVE RAIN NO MATTER WHEN IT FALLS and stop allowing umpteen billions of tons of the stuff to simply drain off back into the sea!!

The version I watched mentioned a 30% leakage rate.  Can you imagine filling your tank up then allowing a third of it to leak away during the day?  It's just plain negligence - profit over performance.

This is precisely what happens every time we fill our tanks (waste).

I agree with the sentiment though. The utility companies need to 1, fix the leaks to get wastage to an acceptable level and 2, reinvest into better water management solutions for times of drought.
