CRB or standard police check?
« on: January 07, 2006, 11:26:27 am »
Do you think a standard police check whick is obtained from the police stations and costs around £10 and shows if any records and convictions are held, is enough or should we be applying for a full CRB check which costs anything from £30-£60??
I would like all my staff properly vetted obviously, but it's getting abit costly.
What would you suggest?

I would suggest a full CRB check.

It contains additional information that a check of someones convictions does not contain.

Not sure about the standard Police Checks. I've never used one.

With regards to the CRB checks the employer/prospective employer fills in the application form because whatever method you use, no information will be handed to you without the employee giving permission.

You can't just ask the Police  about someone.

Hi all,

For what its worth, Criminal Record Bureau checks are only really needed for those occupations like care workers/taxi drivers etc where you are dealing with vunerable adults & children in a service sector capacity.

go to www.crb.gov.uk for more info on CRB checks & umbrella bodies etc.

Hi Lisa,

If you do the police one your making some sort of an effort which your clients will appreciate. I think the CRB one covers you for suitability to work in schools, nurseries and places like that where they insist on it and IMO anyone having contracts in these sort of places should do it as a matter of course.
There's probably more to it than i've mentioned CMS would probably be able to give you a more factual answer.

its only domestic that i'm doing at the mo, it's a trust issue i think. Also i have a client who has weekly cleans and she is blind. Do you think this would come into the vunerable persons bit for crbing?

Lisa,

If your only doing domestics IMO the police one would be enough. As for your client who's blind i really don't know enough about that particular situation to comment.

Information on a CRB check is given under the following headings (in this order).

Police records of Convictions, Cautions, Reprimands and Final Warnings.

Information from the list held under section 142 of the Education Act 2002.

Protection of Children Act List information.

Protection of Vulnerable Adults List Information.

Other relevant information disclosed at the Chief Police Officer(s) discretion.

This is an exact copy of the headings from an 'Enhanced Criminal Record Certificate' within the meaning of sections 115 and 116 of the Police Act 1997.

Hi Lisa,

I don`t know enough details about the police checks to say what they disclose, I would assume they only cover criminal conviction records, take a look at www.met.police.uk, here you will find most of the relevent police check forms to download for your perspective employees to fill in and send off.

Also instead, it might be worth contacting the police direct to see what their checks actually cover, and then you can compare with the CRB route.

Take a look at www.volunteering.org.uk it has some interesting comments on the subjects covering the above and the CRB for you to ponder.

Also it might be worth contacting your insurance broker to see if your policies cover you on this matter.

good luck

That's a very good point Keith.

Imagine the worst case scenario..................

One of your employees carries out a criminal act whilst working on the premises of one of your Clients. It costs them money............

What would your insurers position be?

i) If you had carried out a Police check?
ii) A CRB check?
iii) None of the above?

A bit drastic, I know but worth thinking about.

Hi all
Thanks for the info, i have sent an email to the company you suggested CMS.

I think the full CRB check is going to be more relevent, its better to be fully covered, especially for insurance purposes if any thing did go wrong.

Thanks for pointing me to the info on the volunteers website, it was very helpful.

Who pays for the CRB check ? - the prospective employee or me as the potential employer ?

How long do they take to process now ? as opposed to when the s*it hit the fan a few years back re the teachers at start of term ?
