burners on or off
« on: December 26, 2011, 04:52:47 pm »
hi all merry xmas and a happy new year, my question today is, if u use a burner to heat your water, do u leave it on between jobs, if they are say, 10 to 15 mins apart, switch off or  leave on all,  or most of day.

When you say a burner do you mean a heater like an L5 or a fogwash??

If so then they only ignite when you turn the water on like a residential combi boiler, I use an L5 heater and I turn off the gas between jobs..

hi Richard mine is an ionics webasto, 3yrs old just had it replaced £500 plus vat & fitting so,
thought, maybe switching it off and on wears it out more, and, is it cheaper in long run to do so or just leave it on, with cold days. when water is not running it does go into a slower mode but not off, then when pumps run it kicks in .

IMO leave it on between jobs so that it it doesn't have to come back up to temperature after cooling down.
It should not use much diesel as it does not have to heat water running through pipe, just cut in periodically to maintain temp.

i am also wondering that by switching it off & on all day, that it wears it out quicker?

If the job is less than 5 mins away I'll leave it running.
If it's more than that, I always switch it off, always have done.
