gaffer tape residue removal
« on: December 21, 2011, 07:46:22 pm »
Hi
Got a commercial job that has had lots of building work completed and the
builders used gaffer tape to hold tarps over some windows above the building work.
Now some months later guess who has the job of removing all the tape??
Tape removed but lots of hard residue(tape backing) left on windows - spent 4 hours today
using some thinners and elbow grease - not easy very messy.
Loads more to do.
Any ideas folks ??
Russ

I've used petrol on a cloth to remove that stuff before but was on outside windows.
It done the job no problem, but not sure if you would be able to use it where you are due to H&S?

I have found that using Oil Flo and a non-scratch scouring brush works ok, but its still hard work which requires a lot of elbow grease.

What I normally do, is scrub the tape residue with the scourer first, then soak with Oil-Flo and follow up again with the scourer and scraper if needed.

If you are working in a team, it is better, you get the first person to go along with the scourer while the next guy follows with the Oil-Flo, when the first has finshed a side, he then wfp or trads the glass off.

Repeat this and it's soon done.

Charge well over the top for the job.

I find cooking oil works well on normal tape residue, never tried it on gaffer tape though, but worth a try

wear gloves if you use petrol or thinners . both of these will go thru the pores of your skin easily  and you will be ill later
