My back up plan for snow!
« on: December 04, 2011, 07:50:19 pm »
www.snow-clearers.co.uk
As you all know we all got hit with the snow last year.
I employ 3 staff and we lost around 3 weeks of working last year.
I have invested in a snow blower and an industrial gritter for this year
and have approx 6.5 tons of rock salt in stock.
As stated this is my back up plan if the snow hits hard again this year!
I run a 4wd vehicle and have trailer ,etc to get machinery around.
Already have a school and a large business that will use my service
and my guys will be out when it hits pushing the service.
If it does not snow we will continue to work as normal.
Considered hot systems but thought this may be the way forward?
Will accept your views both positive and negative.

Thanks for your comment Mark
I agree the temps were very low
but we provide a gritting service too so fingers crossed
we should get busy with that when we know its imminent.
We tried to work in those temps last year.
Was taking us an hour or so to get everything defrosted got to first job
and the hoses froze on floor or the pumps froze again.
We did all the usual with heaters, etc but it was a big pain in the bum.

I know exactly what you mean chap - I found I could work to about minus 5 or 6 but the biggest probs were the unheated rooms and connys where the windows froze straight away - bloomin nightmare  :)

I thought that rock salt/grit was only effective down to minus 5/6, what do you plan to d if it goes down to -15 like it did last year.  :o :o
I can remember when waking up stiff in the morning was a good thing.

Hi,

Two of our guys are out tonight gritting.

Our first outing of the season. Last year we had already been going out most nights from the beginning of November.

I was beginning to get worried as we are really going for it this year....now we only have 148.5 tons of salt left!

Cheers,

Huw

Good luck with it mate.  Was there a lot of health and safety loops to jump thru, or training certificates seeing as employ people and the risks involved, esp if doing bigger contracts?

Nice and enterprising, hope its not too mild a one on your first year trying.  I know people who rented out diggers and old trucks to do gritting/emergency transportation, did quite well out of it, pretty much worked around the clock last winter.

Gud stuff!
