carpet ripples
«
on:

Hi all
Just revisited client whose carpet I cleaned this morning.
Lounge, man-made.
There are now large ripples in the carpet. This has happened to me twice before both on kitchen Flotex look alike. On both occasions the ripples dissappeared on drying. The carpet I cleaned today is now sock dry but not completely dry.
Has anyone had this experience and the ripples have not disappeared?
My client has agreed to leave it overnight to be certain that it is completely dry before attempying a restretch.
Any comments appreciated.
David

David;
The ripples occur whenever the humidity rises drastically in the room on a carpet that has not been properly fitted.
No need to worry; however, it will fall right back into its normal FLAT position on the floor.

as long as the the secoundry backing is ok then the ripples will eventually disappear, do not attempt to restretch the carpet to soon as this will overstretch the carpet. If the backing is coming away then you will have made the problem worse by wet cleaning it.

This often happens with felt backed carpets,if felt backing it will go back, sounds like you may have overwet the carpet so its taking longer than usual to flatten out .

Thanks for comments so far.
I realise the mistake now. I forgot to tell them to leave the lounge door open something I always do, but not this time. Apparently they shut the door as soon as I left with no windows open. You live and learn.

Better still David on a cold day like today tell them to close doors put heating up and open a windaw, same effect as a de-humid'.

Hi David,
You did not say at what temperature you cleaned the carpet.
Rippling is common and is caused by the hot solution softening the latex in the backing of the carpet. I have never had a problem as the carpet always reverts back to its original position when completely dry.

Had this a few times. Normally caused by loose fitting. Once did a room with a seam - half rippled, half didn't!
Every time, ripples disappeared within 24 hours.
Always a bit of a worry when it happens though!

Hi Guys,
Ripples will always dissapear within a couple of days.
My theory is that the water plasticises the backing causing it to expand and as it is trapped it takes longer to evapourate , so the carpet appears dry and rippled.
After a while you will become adept at predicting ripples and can forewarn the customer.
Cheers
Doug
