scrim or not too scrim is the Question
« on: October 15, 2011, 10:43:22 pm »
These last 12 months i have now been debating if there is any real need for me to scrim round the edges any more.Thereis only a hair line of water which on test windows of not scrimming the edges just total dry .In fact i would say that not using the scrim gives a better quicker result.I have been at this now forabout 6 yrs and i know theres a few of you that don't and alot that do.
Thoughts?

I wonder whether it's worth the hassle too. Most probably don't care or notice. Being a window cleaner it stands out more but to your average joe householder I doubt they see... and most have net curtains anyway.

Scrim, definitely. What you can see from the outside is different from what is seen from the inside. You may be fine on a few panes but those (the majority possibly)look dreadful if not scrimmed round the edges. It's the thin end if the wedge too, next it'll be stop wiping the sills, or flicking the cobwebs away. Before long you'll be loosing customers. Standards, keep them up!  ;)

But that hairline of water, will after a few houses, contain dirt and when that hailine dries it will notice.

I tested not scrimming on 2 hotels where we clean the inside as well as the outside. It takes 2 hrs per hotel so plenty of drying time. The results where just as good as using a scrim.Maybe i am crap at using a scrim and thats why this looks the better option  ;D

what liquid do you use mate ?

if it is gg3/4 or simlar, then why not wipe top edge wipe (micro fiber) just before you blade the window
or, trad window then wipe top to stop runs.

or use wfp :)

Dude I have a customer for you IF you cover shanklin  ;) you will need wfp for over con roof (swear you do this anyways.

Hi Ian hows you doing, been a while.Lost your number when me last mobile crashed, took all numbers with it .Yes i cover the wight now,so Shanklin no probs.
Started out WFP but i took on another round which was trad, slowly moving some over to WFP but to be honest i enjoy mixing the work up abit.
As for liquid tried unger but dont like the fact theres no slide in it.So now pure water with a small dash of fairy, works a treat for me as i was adding  a bit of fairy to the unger to give it some slide .The gg products are not sold on the IOW
so i have not used them but mainly as too tight to pay the P&P which is always alot more getting here for some reason  ::)Maybe when you next visit you could pop some over  ;D

Lee Burbidge  You got a link for these blue cloths i keep reading about ,cheers

I'd say just wipe the top and sill, unless the sides are really bad as the majority of windows have curtains that hide the sides. Window cleaners are they own worst critics imo  8)

personally i wipe both edges and the top before blading off....then go round all edges, top and bottom with a dry micro fibre after

but a dry clean/old worn in scrim is better if your water is dirty, as it picks up the water than a micro in my experience

I'm a Trad. I stopped using scrims hundreds of years ago, mainly because of the cost. When I wipe round frames and sills I use a hand towel cut in half. You can buy good quality towels for about £2, which will work out at £1 each. I don't however, wipe the glass round the frames, only the top and the sill. As for getting into the edge, try dog-earing the blades, that'll save you having to do that.

I have recently bought a Wagtail Swoop, and have been getting to grips with that. The Wagtail will save you having to wipe any of the frame, only the sill. I used to use between 18 and 28 cloths each day (don't bother wringing them out), but now, with the Wagtail, maybe four or five. The saving in buying more cloths will pay for the Wagtail (£33)!!!!
