Scrapers
« on: October 04, 2011, 02:21:32 am »
Until now I've only ever used an Unger ErgoTec glass 4" scraper (along with my pocket one). It does the job fine but it's a nightmare where it comes to changing the blades. Can anyone recommend a better one?

could be your problem is the 4 inch only takes carbon steel blades, these rust and then stick in the track
the only scrapers that take a non rusting stainless steel blade  are the 6 inchers,of these  i have tried the Triumph 2000 and the MK2 , but i like the Unger ergotec 6 incher the best of all ,great grip and fits properly onto a pole

ive cut my finger a few times changing the unger scrapers!!if you use pliers and be careful you should have no problems.they do rust quite quickly though.i like them as i can pop them on my extension pole for the odd baked on bird muck or paint on higher windows that are too dangerous to reach with ladders.
price higher/work harder!

Yeah they rust really bad so removing is such a pain. The bit of plastic that the blade goes into on the ErgoTec is so flimsy. That sounds better having the stainless steel blades plus I wanted to use a 6" one instead anyway. Cheers.

6" Sorbo looks very nice.
Easy to change blades and it pivots.

Hi Joshem I had the same problem with my small metal scraper & a 6 inch Unger ergotec!
To solve this I cleaned both scrapers up. On the Unger I scrubbed the plastic slide with a nail brush until all the crap came off and then I covered it in grease both sides. I then did the same to the lower part of the blade that is seated in the scraper and left the upper part (the bit you use on the glass) clean. So when the water runs into the scraper it can’t get to the metal and rust away!

When you come to use the other (new) end of the blade just wipe the grease off with a rag/tissue & don’t bother re-greasing the old end as it won’t be used again and there’s still enough grease on the plastic insert so when it’s time to swap out it will still slide out no problem. Just repeat the same process for a brand new blade.

On my small scraper when the blade is old it slides out easy unlike my mate who goes through almost one scraper a month!
I say use grease rather than a liquid lube or spray as grease won’t run where it’s not wanted.
I also take the plastic cover off the scraper when I’m finished for the day and just leave it overnight so any water on the blade can evaporates which really does help! As I do a lot of first cleans so mine gets hammered.
Sorry about my English I’m dyslexic.

I know it's a German site, but I assume you can get them in UK too

Thanks andy_a I'll give that a go. Yeah I started to give my scrapers a good drying at the end of each day and I've seen a big improvement with getting more life out of a blade.

The only reason I stick with my small metal scraper is it slots into my unger bucket on belt and its very handy but this looks like a brilliant little tool shame this wont slot in!

i have that one its in the van half blade still in it needs a better mechanism for installing and removing the blade i use cheap copy unger blades or infact i got some small green ungers from the cleaning show you press a button and turn the blade round then clip it shut there plastic and not much bigger than the small blades but easy to change and small enough to fit in your pocket and there plastic so dont rust but you cant attach them onto a pole for high windows

Yeah it certainly does need to be improved. In fact, the first time I ever changed the blade I removed the plastic thing the blade slots into and, without opening my pack of blades, bent the piece of plastic because I presumed it was throw-away. I thought each blade was going to have its own plastic backing... Luckily I didn't snap it! I like its usability though because it fits nicely on my Unger belt and, once the blades are in, I don't have any problems with it whatsoever...
