The ones i have done have been through the school itself.
If you got something in mind approach the caretaker.

I approached a few schools and they advised me to approach them just before the Summer holidays, dont be dismayed by this is thats the reply, it doesnt hurt for them to have your details on file over the year

I have worked with a lot schools and got in to all of them by contacting them directly. I call up and with my best telephone voice ask for the person responsible, in my experience this could be the caretaker, the head, business manager or admin depending on the size of the school. Schools usually have this type of work during half term break and summer holiday so a few weeks before is a good time. Follow this up with a letter or something that they can keep on file.
I have found that once you get into one and do a good job it makes it so much easier to get into the next one as you will have a reference and schools do talk to each other. Don't be disheartened if you get politely knocked back it took me ages to get my first school but once your in....your in
good luck

Bigger schools will have a "site manager" or "bursar" who looks after everything to do with maintenance (among other things).
Probably the best way would to be ring the school and ask something like, "If I wanted to speak to the person responsible for buying in maintenance services, who would I ask for?"
