Top of Google but no calls? Chrome users
« on: September 27, 2011, 11:14:09 am »
As many of you know I do websites for a few carpet cleaners.

I have over the last week spoken to a couple of carpet cleaners who are complaining that their sites are at the top of Google but they don't get any calls.

When investigated I found that the were using Chrome as their browser. Chrome as a default collect browsing history. So when you click on a site usually your own then search again later your site will show near or at the top. Even if you clear your history this still happens.

Does also happen with the some other browsers if you are logged into your Google account, have Google plugins installed or have set it up usually when registering for a Google account.

One of the persons I was explaining this to wouldn't have it. Was paying another company to get him top of Google even though he was actually on page 2.

Worth checking your search results with a different browser that you don't normally use.

Michael

to stop this simply log into your google account, go to settings and get it to stop showing personalised search results. since last checking this will work on all browsers.

also you may not get calls because a lot of  the cheap cleaners are at the top of adwords and i think customers are booking them without looking round.

You can check exactly where you are in the listings by going into your adwords account.

Go to reporting and tools, then add preview and diagnosis. Then enter your search words from your campagn in the search box.

You will then see where you are in the listings. :)

Ive noticed over the last few days I get 3-4 calls within a 2 hour window from customers searching online and then nothing the rest of the day.

Any reason why?

thanks

It will tell you your top of the listings but only because it knows
that's what you want to here.
Best way to check is by Googling on customers computer and
seeing your listing.
I do it at least once a day from a customers house, they don't
mind when you tell them why.

Does that give you the .co.uk or the .com results?

When I tried, I set it to .co.uk but still got shown the .com results.

If you're using Chrome - click on the spanner on the right of your tool bar and open a new incognito window.

This won't leave a trail in your browser history and also won't use any info from previous searches,so you will get an accurate picture of where your site ranks for any search.

When you go into your google account it is related to your domain and the campaigns you have active and nothing else.
You select the keywords and enter them. If you have multiple campaignes it will show you the relevant results for the the keywords you enter. the keywords you enter must be the same as in your campaignes.

Remember that if you are down the list, no matter how much you bid, not everyone can be at the top of the list

I see, PPC only, not organic results. Thanks.
