DI vessels..what else?
« on: September 21, 2011, 08:01:55 pm »
so after traditional cleaning since 1973 we decided 3 years ago to add wfp to our service

we started small, using it only on big jobs....so all we bought was  pair of DI vessels, and used customers taps on site for water source.

well as expected we are using it more and more now, so are moving up to a van delivery set up

now water is a scarce commodity these days, and we have decided not to go with an RO system

so what do we add to the vesels?

i am asking this after just having an air lock in the tap>vessels....causing my pole tubing to block up with resin!!!

so questions...

when i lookied at the ionics DI set up

1 - i  saw they had carbon sediment filters....do these go in before the DI, or after?

2 - i also think they have resin filters...i guess these go in post DI to stop resin escaping the vessels and getting into the hoses? can these be bought seperately somewhere?

3 - also...water softeners...what are they? do i need one? how do they work?

thanks in advance :)

as franky said, whats your TDS, that will determine what setup you need.

Resin should NOT leave the vessel, if it does there's something wrong! There are different vessel/riser tube designs. I have 2 11ltr vessels, both are directional but on one if I reversed the flow no resin would escape, the other, if I did the same resin would flow out.

All you need is a strainer just before the pump & have the two vessels after the pump. Fill the tank with tap water. My tap tds is 80ppm so this works fine for me with a 400ltr van mount, I use between 2 & 3 bags of resin per year.

tap TDS is 170....BUT my friend had great results when i filtered rain butt water (TDS reading of 15-20)....cant do this till i get delivery system in van though

we dont want RO no matter what our TDS is though...we dont want to waste water...and ionics pro7 is too expensive (the only non waste RO there is i believe)

i aim to De ionise the water from home tap, straight into the tank...so wont have vessels post tank at all

it is strange that the resin got into the hose, as our vessels are directional...and were all hooked up correctly (i checked)

so can i buy a carbon filter? do i even need one?

is there any such thing as a resin filter (post vessel) you can buy like the ionics setups have?

are softeners only needed for high TDS and only on RO systems?

sorry for all the questions but ive been behind the times for a bit by just using two vessels in line...its worked for so long that im out of the loop regarding new stuff etc :)

You can fit a strainer post DI if you want to. You might get the odd resin bead get through the vessel's own internal strainers but nothing more.

I would have the vessels on the van, your resin will last longer with a slower flow though them + you can fill tank faster & from anywhere. ;)

thanks for the tip about vessels :)

where do i get a strainer from?

also...does a carbon sediment filter work the same way as a vessel ie hose lock in/out fittings?

reason i ask is i may be pumping rain water through it to filter out nasty green pollen in spring time etc

my buddy found that this year after dionising rain water butt water...the tds reading was 000 but water was still green from pollen...i guess a carbon filter would stop this?

just been thinking about this...how does that work then?

surely 500litres of water though resin, uses the resin the same no matter how fast its passing through?

not saying your wrong...just dont get it is all  ???

Carbon filter is for chlorine to protect RO filter.

I think a sediment might be better..

Do you not want a Ro just cos you don't want to waste water? What makes you think your wasting it anyway, it just goes back to the water treatmant site

thats what i said...but my partner (business owner and totally against wfp use all together) wont have it

it took me 7 years to talk him into getting this far....so if he wants DI...then i wont argue...ill just take what i can get

your gonna spend a lot on resin if your DI only.my tap tds is around 35-45 normally.so DI only is fine for me.defo run the water through the DI slowly when filling up.it lasts longer and uses all the resin properly.also when the tds starts to rise past 10 put that vessel in front of one with fresh resin so you have 2 vessels in tandem until the old resin reaches the same as your tap water then throw away.keep repeating this as itll make the most of your resin.

thanks daz...we already do this...we run two always....when they start to read above 7ish we use a third one to get the most from the resin

we are seriously considering using rain water tbh....but am having trouble working out which filters remove dust like pollen....dont want green water lol

I think you must read this web page first to get a better back ground information. You are drawing some conclusions before you really truly understand how it all works.
