clx-end stop broke
« on: July 31, 2011, 09:56:17 am »
hi  all

as heading says my top thinest section on clx-22 got jam rigid last month :(

managed to extend top section in the end to find positive end stop, which looks to be tape had come undone causing the jamming up.

I took off clamp removed thinest section; wiped over with white spirit to remove all left overs of tape.

It works fine but i couldn't work out how you do properly with end stop tape?

haven't got any but was worried i would balls up and end up with top sectioned extended and glued stuck ;D

Diy isn't my thing and was wondering now i have fixed without end stop would i have to break off clamp to re-do with end stop ???

thanks lee

You can use a good quality electricians tape to 're-apply' a new end stop. Research older posts on here Alex tells you how to do it if i remember right.  :D

1 times round the pole with electrical tape - loosen the clamp right off, it may need opening slightly when you put the section back in - use a flat head to open it slightly
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

As has been said the end-stop tape can be replaced by using electrical insulating tape. Remove the section from the pole that needs the end-stop replacing/repairing. Clean any residual tape off and allow section to dry. At about 130mm up from the base wrap one and a quarter wraps of insulating tape around the section. To fit this section back inside the next section follow these steps:

Undo and remove the lever assembly
Using a small screwdriver or an Allen key, insert this between the jaws of the clamps from below and lever the jaws slightly apart.
Slide the section into the clamp, when the tape reaches the clamp make sure that the overlap section of tape is at the front, once the tape has slid about 1cm into the clamp jaws twist it around so that the overlap area goes to the back of the clamp before sliding carefully all the way into the pole.
Re-assemble the lever assembly and the pole is ready to use.

As part of a regular pole maintenance program I would recommend replacing all of the joint stops every 4-6 months depending on how dirty the pole has gotten. Whilst doing this it is a good opportunity to remove all sections clean them all thoroughly inside and out, re-apply new tape and then coat the bottom of the sections with PTFE spray.

On the subject of pole maintenance I have also found it beneficial to put a very small drop of 3 in 1 oil on the clamp lever cam. This keeps the levers operating smoothly and prevents cam wear - note only use the smallest of drops as you do not want to get any oil on the pole sections!

Alex I sem to remember that sewing machine oil is finer and not as "sticky" as 3 in 1.

You're right sewing machine oil is finer, but I think for this 'low-tech' application a thicker oil will be fine and is what I have used.
