Thinking of getting a lot of flyers delivered but wondered what the average rate was per thousand ?

I know some advertise at 30 pounds per thousand, but I believe this would be for delivering a few others with your own.

One company is asking 120 pounds for solo delivery . . . . . does that sound right ?

Count on one person delivering about 120 an hour.  At minimum wage, £6 an hour, that's about £48 per thousand.  That assumes NO profit for the organiser, so it has to be more than about £58 per thousand, otherwise some of them have to end up in a bin.  Delivered with other leaflets, it can be much cheaper.

Avoid these people like the plague http://www.mailboxnationwide.com.  they score top on google and have an excellent website, unbelievably good prices, and great customer service over the phone.  search reviews for them on google for horror stories.  i got them to deliver leaflets a couple of years back and they delivered some miles away from the target area and dumped the rest.  they then avoided contact and ignored emails and calls.  had to threaten them with court proceedings.

Best thing is to get someone who is dropping leaflets for another firm. I had my leaflets dropped this way.
I had a guy delivering leaflets for me and for local guys who dose pavings etc.
We met half way of 25 pounds.
I would then drop him in the are and pick him up once he finished. This way I know where they are dropped. Person can drop 1000 leaflets a day. My guy was doing 1200-1300 a day. You should see him working - running from house to house
I had 20K leaflets drop in the past month. If you need advice, just let me know.

Yes.  No two ways about it.

Helps if you're thinking long-term, as initially, your customers will be a little widespread.  One customer soon becomes two, etc, so you may need to wait awhile, but it works.

I asked them for a price to deliver to houses only and asked for the number they would hit.  They gave me a total number of households number (i.e. including flats).  When I questioned it they swore blind they were telling the truth.  (Bear in mind this means they could have charged me for every household and only paid their people to deliver to houses).  Once I stated the problem along with my source of data for number of houses (census data) they stopped returning calls or emails.

The fact that they quoted me £25/1000 solus meant that I was smelling a rat right from the start.  When I asked how that could be done, they told me "economies of scale" - utter balls. Remember, if you're having solus delivery, someone has to walk up a driveway and get the leaflet through the letter box.  You CAN NOT consistently do more than 1000 houses in an eight hour day, no matter how big your company is.  Pay someone minimum wage and, as I said, you're on a  minimum of £48 to get 1,000 out.

Avoid anyone who quotes under £50/1000 solus might be a good rule.

all I can add is that to do 1000 leaflets 5 days a week it is very difficult, person won't feel his legs for a first two - three weeks, until used to it. Someone dose that for 25-30 a day  ? I doubt !

Excellent points thanks,  Just to add I normally find better customers through flyers as opposed to canvassing, but obviously you have to do many thousands to get good results.
