attitude and motivation
« on: July 07, 2011, 09:14:26 am »
there has been a few posts lately about low motivation/weather etc, etc.i wouldnt mind too much but its not even winter yet!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

heres what works for me

if possible i fill up and charge my battery, print invoices, worksheets etc the night before my working day.

if its raining hard when im leaving at 8am or 9am i just keep on going until i reach my first job of the day.9 times out of 10 its stopped by the time i get there.just work through the showers if they are off and on throughout the day.

get some goretex boots and jacket.they keep you dry and you dont sweat too much when working in rain.

i mainly work my round from a-z so its mostly on the same order all year round.

dont worry too much about having customer debts.its a constant part of running a window cleaning business.if you are do something about it!phone/text or collect!!

look at your earnings at the end of the year and not individual days as you ll have fantastic earning days/weeks and sometimes nothing at all!!

save up an emergency fund in a seperate account from your tax money and put say £30-£40 a week in it for bad weeks in winter.

enjoy your days off!im having the week off!its easy if your finances are in order!

get organized and dont work flat out all the time.

dont be too hard on yourself when a low motivation day comes.just redouble your efforts when your feeling good.

in winter even if the weather seems too bad get out and say do 11am-3pm.all the half days add up at the end of the year.on the very cold/icy/snowy days last year i could handle 4 hours then back home with the satisfaction that im keeping my business ticking over.

use the best equipment and lightest poles you can afford.

most of the year i love being out in the fresh air, meeting different people during the course of my work and making good money at the same time.

i even find window cleaning good for my mental well being as well as my finances at times!!

anyone else with any positive comments to add? ;D ;D

Reading this whilst sitting in van waiting for bad rain to stop ... Note to buy some gortex clothing ... Seriously though sometimes when people are down its too easy to blame the business sometimes u just need a day off to chill and get head straight ... Paying bills and growing my round is the only motorvation I need

Also, plan regular breaks/holidays so you have something to look forward to otherwise it's just one long grind.

Well done Daz ...... Top post mate.

Everyone needs to be given some encouragement now and again to get themselves motivated, it's easier once you have a stable well groomed

business, but we all have days when our motivation dives south.

I have just started my 31st year in the game, have got mostly top draw customers sifted thoroughly over time, and have loved nearly every bit of it

and I'm only 49 years young.

I dont think I could have just done the windows and nothing else and admire you guys who have done just that. So in 1980 I joint the fire service

and along side my business I put in 22 years and retired 18 months ago, mortgage finished ;D

This life we live is not the rehearsal, its the real deal, go out and grab it with both hands especially you younger guys and girls, life tough but don't be

put off by the negativity, go out there and make something of yourself.

only time im de motivated is when i open the curtains and
its gonna be a blazing hot summers day, thank god most of
our weather is normally mild andwet or cold or i couldnt
survive in window cleaning.

i thrive on the autumn winter and spring and nearly disolve
in the summer

I know how easy it is to get de motivated i get it alot, but like daz says, when im "on it" i really go for it, as i am an all or nothing person, so for instance this week i had a big week , but ran out of work yesterday , and done some extras in with it, so today im off and next week i will finish for thursday too

I think youhave to keep challenging yourself to keep motivated with the windows, picking up new/better work, going for commercial , new equipment, new van etc etc

These things keep me going , also the fact i can have time off if i graft helps

But when you are down , just set realistic targets, if im on a bad week i just tell myself to get out for a morning or just an afternoon, at least youve done 100 quid or something, and usually once you start you get stuck in anyway, i do anyway

Plus like stan said - think about the positives , alot of people earn alot less than you in a much crappier , depressing hierarchal environment, we have total freedom !!

Good post Daz

I drive round an industrial unit and see how other people work.
That motivates me
