Hi All,

In June 2010 I purchased a new leisure battery (Numax CXV24MF) from Tayna Batteries (www.tayna.co.uk). I purchased it with a 3 year guarantee.

About a month ago it started losing its charge after only being used for 2 days.

Below is my contact with Tayna through their webiste so far (sorry its a bit long)... What do you think I should do next as I haven't had a reply since my last message?

Please give the battery a full 24 hour charge leave standing for a couple of days (disconnected) and see what voltage the battery reads after this time.

Hi,

I haven't been able to charge the battery and leave for a couple of days as I rely on it for work... I also don't have a voltage reader...

However - The battery performance is getting worse. It only lasts for a few hours when using it now.

The charge indicator on the battery is always black and never green, even after a full charge.

Are you able to advise on what to do next?

I use the battery to run a 100psi water pump in a window cleaning van.

It used to last 3 days, then down to 2 now only down to 1.

Ah, that explains it - this battery is not designed for use with a window cleaner as they drain the battery down very quickly. You are using a leisure battery whereas you should be using a traction battery.

The product only comes with a 1 year manufacturer warranty if being used in the way you are using it.

When I purchased the battery I purchased it with a 3 year guarantee as stated on your website - No where did it say it was only a year under certain conditions? And I received no documentation with the battery stating this either?

I beleive the battery is still under guarantee, therefore can you please send me a replacement, and I will return the faulty battery on receipt.

I have replaced both of our old leisure batteries with Numax within the last year and they appear to be fine. I ordered them through our local motor factors and was told the guarantee was a year. We also have a Numax 10amp leisure battery charger to top the batteries up every couple of days.

If your last leisure battery lasted you 5 years and your pattern of work in similar, then you probably have a duff battery unless there is an issue with your battery charger.

I would take the advice of a few on here and try your local scrap yard for a few second hand starter batteries to get you through this time.
It is obvious that Numax aren't interested in your problem (I have noted this for future reference) and there isn't much you can do about it without it costing you in time, resources and energy to take this matter further.

I would contact Lucas via their website and ask them to recommend the correct battery for your requirements. I would then take my future business elsewhere and never return.

Personally, we initially purchased cheap leisure batteries from a local caravan supplier and must admit they lasted us well. I went to Numax as I was looking for something of better quality.

My view is that there are hundreds of us successfully using leisure batteries to drive our pumps without issue. I am sure that there are some who are more fastidious than I am when it comes to checking and maintaining our batteries and others who are less so, but apart from the occassional window cleaner with a problem, we don't hear much from this side.

With this in mind, I think that suggesting a traction battery is a little over the top for our application. After all, we aren't in the same situation as someone crossing the Atlantic in his boat, are we?  I don't even think that the Ambulance Service use traction batteries in their ambulances.

I went into a local camping shop yesterday and spoke to the owner about the problem and he agreed that it must be a duff battery.

He gave me some good advice and I bought a new leisure battery from him, for a really good price to. It has a 2 year warranty... If I have any problems with it at least he's only just down the road.

Not really... He was just basically saying the Numax battery that died on me was more than capable of running what it was running and shouldn't have died after just 1 year... He sold me a new battery of exactly the same spec when he could have sold me a more expensive one.

if you search for shurflow pumps on google you will find there primary use was for RV or caravan water pumps, so basically you are using the battery the same as if it was in a motor home running the shower.

so basically his answer to you using it as a window cleaner is rubbish.

I had a leisure battery go odd on me a few months back. It showed full charge yet had no power to run the pump.

I took it back to my local supplier who checked on on a crank test and agreed there was a problem, so sent it back.

I got a brand new replacement in 3 days.

They now have a very loyal customer.

I had a similar problem with Tanya as soon as I said the battery was running a pump they didn't want to know. So I went else where and got an AGM battery. Just on a side point, ho long does it take your pump to turn off after you dead end the hose, if the pump is building extra pressure up it can put more strain on the battery.
