Leave it for a few days to relax before trying to stretch it back.

With John but I would go back a day or so before to re-glue gripper.

Are you certain it is 80/20 as they can be polypropylene and still look and feel very much like a wool or wool blend.
B/W carpets are being produced plain these days so don't rely on pattern as a guide

Do as len says and glue gripper, first cut into 6" strips then use a gap filling adhesive gripfill is the easyst to get hold of from hardware stores, needs to be left fo24 hours to cure. I would doublebank(use two lots one behind the other) it

The key is to get the carpet as warm as poss b4 attempting to restretch. I would ask the custi to turn the heat up full belt in the room first thing in the morning and then do the job late afternoon.  Stretch the shortest distance first, longest distance last.

As Derek says more and more carpets are coming on to the market in the Belgian style. I always check the back for those tell tale cotton strands. Always best to have a good relationship with a good carpet fitter, in good I mean someone who knows the game. They can often stretch back when you have tried in vain, it is a skill.

thanks for all your help, i have a quality fitter going in shortly, the carpet is a brintons bell twist and i now realise what caused the problem i think.
my machine unknown to me during the job lost one of the vacuum pumps and while continuiong to put water in was not takimg it out in sufficent volume although the carpet at the end of the clean dident seem, overly wet, it must have been and with the upholstery also drying out the combined moisture level was just too much even trhough i had air movers on...also the gripper in one area had only been laid on double sided tape....onto the concrete..i have a feeling this is going to be a big loss, but perheps the fitter with his power stretcher can win the day. cheers Bev

Bev,

As this appears to be an over wetting type shrinkage it is very important that you leave it for several days before attempting a refit.

The carpet will naturally relax back and if you are going to get a result here you will see ruckling beginning.

In many circumstanses the carpet will ruckle enough to be refitted without stretching  , BUT if you stretch it before it has relaxed  , you may find that in a few days you will get a complaint that the carpet has stretched as further ruckling will occur.

I would advise leaving carpet a week before refitting.

Cheers

Doug

I started fitting carpets in 1973 (Carpet cleaning is a sideline for me) in that time I have never ever come across gripper fitted onto double sided tape.

This is a compleate bodge and you need to make your custi aware of that before your start thinking about losing to much money.
