Its all the short trips where your engine doesn't warm up properly, screw replacing it - learn how to to remove and clean it yourself - do this about once every 4 months. Also change your oil to fully synthetic, get the engine flushed, and change oil, air, and fuel filters every 6 months and make sure they are vauxhall ones.

My mechanic said take them off, leave them in brake fluid over night to clean them.

I also read that alot people on forums just blank them off...

Im no mechanic tho, im a window cleaner

First you think you are losing power
then you feel its not pulling up hill as good
then you deffo know you have lost power
and you slow right down and finish up at 5mph
and then nothing at all

Alternatively, give your van an Italian tune up once in a while.  Get the engine good and hot then drive along a few miles of motorway in a gear that gives you high revs (third or fourth).  Blows a lot of the rubbish build-up out of the exhaust.  Clears up a lot of problems with diesels.
