Carpet Stair Rods
« on: April 04, 2011, 08:57:16 pm »
For the first time in 3 years I am cleaning stairs that have stair rods. I aim to use Fushion8 for the clean but am I wise to remove the stair rods for the clean? Or do they stay in situ?

Colin

I've cleaned stairs with rods in them many times. It should be fine, I just leave them in. I would try my best to not wet them and have a towel handy to give them a wipe down after every step you've cleaned.

If they are easy to remove thats one thing, but they might be harder to replace. And it'll be up to the customer to replace them. Save yourself a call back.

Cheers Tony.

I searched CIU before I posted and noted that someone had caused stair rods to tarnish. But I'm trusting Fushion8 not to have such an effect.

Just water can tarnish them, don't take the risk!

Besides whether they will tarnish or not, take them out and there will be a big wad of crap behind them because the customer usually will never have taken them out and vacuumed behind them.

Prior to cleaning I always state that they "will need removing" to do the clean but cannot be replaced immediately due to moisture - they need leaving out for 24 hours afterwards.  Quite often the customer will join you in removing them, you start at the top and they start at the bottom, meet in the middle, doesn't take very long.

Most just slide sideways, but I have done the odd job where they were screwed and need a screwdriver to loosen before removal

Colin you need 20 mm alcathene pipe cut to size cut one side of pipe then it just sits round the rod easy peasy

Dont get them wet then! lol

Seriously tho, its pretty straight forward to not get a drop on them. And even easier to give them a wipe straight away if you do.

Remvoing them is not as straight forward as it looks, and replacing them is another pain. Been there done that...

But if your in doubt Colin, then just remove them just to be on the safe side.

Stair rods are making a come back.

Why Colin would you even consider removing them for cleaning purposes  ??? (I take it this was a serious question) ,,,,, that just makes the job harder and longer.

Have you ever taken these up? You gotta remove 4 small screws (well embedded in the stair) remove fittings and rod. Then you'll have to re-fit them exactly in the same position, otherwise if they're a cheaper version your'll find one side as new the other slightly worn or discoloured  ::)

Cover with terry towel and clean carefully around them using the spray first method. Use the vac end (no tool attached) to suck up between rod and riser (it's easier that way)  ;)

Colin, you where joking of course  :-[
