Dirty grout lines need cleaning
« on: March 03, 2011, 09:44:35 am »
Hi all, looking for some advice on how to properly clean grout lines
on my kitchen floor. We have cream tiles and the lad who tiled it used large
spacers, so the grout lines look terrible because they are so dirty.
Of course the missus wanted cream or ivory grout cos she thought it would
always stay that colour but never banked on getting the dirtiest st. Bernard known to man, any how's we going to try and sell the house and the emphasis is on try, so I need to get the grout looking as best as I can. I was thinking about trying to steam clean it but I don't know how effective that would be. Also don't know if they can be hired in my parts. Failing that it will probably be a hands and knees job.... For the missus. Ha ha. Also the grout was never sealed, does sealing the grout really work and if so what's the best sealer. Anyhows any advice would be most welcoming.
P. S Its a fairly large kitchen so don't fancy getting down on me hands and knees if poss.

Thanks Bren ;D

Get in touch with a guy called Kev Martin he runs a tiling/hard floor cleaning firm sells products by a fim called Aquamix. He is on 0121 705 5333. You will also find him on other cleaning forums. Go on one of his flooring courses and you will be able to add it to your own works.

A mine of hard floor information. He will tell you how to do it exactly. You will be able to clean the floor, seal the grout, so it doesnt get dirty again,or change the coulour if you want.Good luck with it.

have you got a rotary with a scrubbing brush attachment? i use viper venom for grouting, its available from alltec its an american company the products are exellent.Applt by sprayer into the grout brush in with a grout brush or something similar.allow to dwell for 10 mins or so .give it another brush.if you have the rotary go over with a detergent( i use qmt stoneclean from prochem).give it a good scrub then go over with a wet pick up .
If you want to seal spray with stoneseal(prochem)or something similar.
thats roughly the routine obviously some of the other boys may do differently, obviously easy if you have the gear !!
hope this helps    gary bristowclean

I used some grout cleaner from screwfix the other day on my mold, worked a treat.  You can get a sealer in a can for just under £20 that will do the trick.

The best place for advice is http://www.tilersforums.co.uk those chaps know their stuff.  They have been very helpful with all my recent questions.

Depending on the condition of your grout it might be easier to re-grout the floor, with the colour the missis wants, then seal it before the hound gets to it  ;D

You do need larger gaps with floor tiles.  If it's not really your cup of tea then post an ad on that forum and I'm sure a local chap will pop along and do it for you.  You might even be able to do a job in return.

1. Spray down Aquamix heavy duty tile & grout cleaner
2. Scrub grout lines with grout brush
3. Throw water down and suck up with wet vac (or use HWE with glide)

Rotary can be used before grout brush to reduce labour.

Easy.

Anything with phosphoric acid in will do the job nicely.
