ay up m8 thought you had packed window cleaning to do photography?
to be honest i do no the industry i work in i put a addvert in local paper for a part time window cleaner you should have seen the knuckle heads and thick necks that applied all window cleaners but by the left. i didnt bother in the end :-X

may be we could use that as a frightner or filter
all applicants must have city and guilds level 2 in window cleaning you wouldnt see them knuckle heads for dust ;D ;D ;D ;D

I see your point Stephen.
But because people ridicule the idea of C&Gs in Window Cleaning, the hard working, very good workers will overlook the course.
Then employees who seek Window Cleaners that are C&Gs qualified, could alienate good, hard working Window Cleaners because they haven't got the qualification.

If you could get funding for every employee you take on, wouldn't you take it?
The Chamber of Commerce in Leicester publishes a list of schemes, grants and privately funded loans to small businesses each year.
There are currently 3 grants that are available to help cover the initial cost of taking on employees, £2,000 one off payment per employee.
This is to help secure the future employment of that employee.

on training
the biggest arguments on this site is ladders and how dangerous they are and that most are wfp and dont use ladders please read the next bit carefully quote

Two full training days, split over a period of 2 months, full of great workshops, risk assessment and working at height certification.
what good will working at heights  certification if your stood on the floor all day

will this mean only 1 day training to get your city and guilds
[Hope this information helps

The City and Guilds Level 2 is not just about training
Infact in different industries some suppliers don’t even provide it for their learners?
In my opinion this is one of the reasons Government pulled Train to Gain
“The point of train to gain being providing funding for companies like some of the forum users that otherwise may not be able to due to financial constraints to invest in training

The City and Guilds is about window cleaners having an opportunity to put their knowledge, experience and practical ability and to set these against standards written specifically for the window cleaning industry.

Proof acquired through practical observation carried out in their work place, written question, proof of prior learning by candidates showing training certification they have carried out before starting the City and Guilds. Customer references. Etc

Look it’s funded what more can I say

Having attended the city and guilds course I would say that the main problem was the fact that a lot of time in the class was spent signing ALL of the forms, which in my opinion wasted time as we could have simply taken documents home to sign. I understand that for you if a candidate takes them home and never comes back, you will probably lose the money.

The course would greatly benefit by having max two days in a classroom and one day in the field as a group, as well as being assessed a few weeks later on your own work.

I also believe that in order to gain an NVQ a candidate should be expected to gain training and passing perhaps at least two of the following - Safety Harness Training – PASMA – IPAF – Ladder Training- IRATA.
Cradle training should be made available and perhaps this is something the Clean it up board could help create, as there seems to be nothing available formally, and as a collective group this should be achievable.

I also think that an outdoor training facility should be made available this could possibly be held at a large building, where techniques such as water fed poling, laddering, correct use of squeegees and showing how to rig up a cradle and use one safely. Perhaps even adding in a demonstration on a mewp.  This would then demonstrate working at height safely, as I believe many of the window cleaners who have trained are possibly single guys working on houses using water fed poles only. The danger being that they manage to secure a fifty storey building for window cleaning because they have shown their NVQ and believe themselves to be capable, then set about getting INTO a cradle for the very first time, ( I know on the course you recommend training by the manufacturer but will this be done?)  and as you are aware this would be very dangerous for the PROPERLY untrained/unskilled window cleaners. I know as well as the rest of you that this is very unlikely, but what would happen if it did? Would you be held liable/responsible  anyway?

For me as a company owner I will put my staff through the course, and will continue to put them on many types of courses throughout their working life whilst in my employment. BUT first I will fully train them in ALL of the methods and practices I have acquired over the past twenty five years or so, which I myself were taught by window cleaners who had themselves been working as window cleaners for up to fifty years.

I know I don’t know everything, and I am still capable of learning more, but I think before an employee goes on an intensive course of any kind they should have a good understanding of health and safety as well as being competent at what they do within their industry.

I fully understand your business model and I think it is great, well thought out and I am sure very profitable for all concerned, however I really think that with effort it could be a MUST for all window cleaners.

It however is NOT a joke nor a waste of time for anybody to be trained and undertake qualifications - WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE BY DOING ANY COURSES?

shaun i passed my city and guilds when it was something  a cetificate you had earned
and nothing to do with this new poxy nvq only 60% of my class passed

i worked 27 years in my field and was the best in lancashire and the best paid i started a window cleaning bussines because i wated a change and am enjoying it  ;D ;D ;D
the fact is the average domestic cleaner probably does not need the nvq. However i learned alot on it about cradles, cherry pickers, working at height , ladders, employer responsibility , employee responsibility etb. Like all things some of it i applied some of it i know for future reference and some didnt and wont apply to me. I made good contacts in the industry through it and paid nothing. Valueless? I dont Think so. Laughable? Only to those who are to arrogant to see its value. I will have to take your word for your previous job , but it cant of been that great if you would rather clean windows, instead of being the best paid individual in your industry. maybe it was mcdonalds, they offer degrees for over achievers like you :-)
