Seems doubtful to me that ice would scratch glass.

The most common causes of scratches are:

Grit.

Metal instrument.

And yes scratches can be polished out, provided that a) its not very deep and b) it's not toughened glass.

It depends how deep the scratch is. I have had the same complaint a few weeks ago and have bought a kit of the net {cerium oxide/drill bit and pads}. My plan was to try it on a peice of glass at home and see what happens. I decided to give it a go and if no joy, replace the pane. Will try it over the next wek or so and see what happens.

You say allegedly. You must go and have a look, before you promise anything tio the custie. Ice alone would not scratch glass. It may just be a mark that will buff off, but from the inside looks like a scratch. I hope that your employee realised to stop cleaning as soon as he saw that it was freezing up! It may have been an almost invisible hairline crack that with water getting into it and then freezing has expanded it!
