Pay first then windows cleaned
« on: November 20, 2010, 08:56:18 pm »
Hi,

On the 08.11.2010 I made a post titled "Half a days work at Richmond".  I received two replies, one from Ray at Topclean via this site & one from another member who emailed me directly.  I opted for the guy who emailed me as he worked in the area stated & was keen to earn £100 cash for 3-4 hours WFP work.  I emailed Ray thanking him for his reply & telling him I had found a local guy & he thanked me for considering him.

I met the other guy at the site to show him the work which is residential all on the first floor & he would be cleaning this while I cleaned traditionally the ground as I am not WFP. He said no problem it was good glass to clean with WFP bla bla bla etc. We arranged for him to call me the day before starting which he did but said that he wanted his money up front as he had been turned over for £185.00 by another window cleaner in the past & did not want a repeat of that. I said no.  He tried to get me to change my mind but I politely told him I would do the work myself which I did the next day which took me 4 hours on the slow.

Good decision. I would say asking for a 20-50% deposit would not be unreasonable but asking for 100% upfront is ridiculous.

Strange way to carry on, but as you said you would pay cash, perhaps he thought he could have that up front. If he had explained the situation before at least you could have said you would pay him after he had finished on the same day. Still his loss and even though you did it yourself not a bad rate of £25.00 per hour! If you get this sort of work again, advertise for "subbie" on invoice basis only. This makes it clear from the start :)

Well that messer was me!

We met looked at the work kev is a really nice guy it seemed like a good deal because i do have a few days at the same post code,i was more interested in helping you out kev then the money but the big mistake i made was not mentioning my past experience to you the 1st day ,

remember the way i asked i said "please dont be offended by what im going to ask"i did explain what happend before with that £185 and i suggested after about 45 mins if you were happy with me and the work that you could possibly pay me upfront for the rest of the day as its the 1st time i only wanted the payment after 45 mins not when i turned up i do hope i made that clear?(My partner and i thought this was reasonable  ??? she is also the boss of me!:)

as a rule any job which takes me more then 2 hours that's subcontract or domestic customer houses i do ask for an advance (for 1st cleans only)some people may or may not think this is reasonable but end of the day we are self employed and we can all choose the best methods that suite us so you see its not that i did not trust you i have been working like this for a while now.in fact i could see you were an honest person but i thought you might have understood where i was coming from which i think you did but you wasnt prepared to meet my request...and we said no hard feelings in the end.

Ofc you are your own boss too and i guess you did not like the idea of paying me after 45 mins which i understood fair enof.(its the 1st time you meet me too and i honestly do not blame you if i was put in the same situation i may react the same way i was thinking about it afterwards)

After we spoke even thou i had that bad experience in the past i do feel with you i should have just turned up and trusted you i do feel i made a mistake with you so im sorry about that!

but I am pleased you finished the work in very good time that is quite impressive!
well done that was some glass!

but im sorry again how things went im working next week in surbiton i normally have my lunch at the duke of buckingham just on the bottem of villiers ave if i see you anytime around ill buy you Dinner and a drink!

Hi Sasha,

Thanks for your post.

This forum is for us window cleaners to share with other forum members there days experiences be-it bad or good. Its what makes us log on & when we do the more new posts the better for all of us.

I made no bad comments about you & did not mention your name as you came across as a  guy who works very hard & has high standards. you kept in good contact with me & showed up when you said despite being on a busy schedule that day. You even offered to show me the ropes regarding WFP.

I know that you felt bad about asking for the money up front & were sincerely sorry that we could not work together on the said day. I did not take offence as I knew it was not a slur on myself.

We ended our chat on good terms I thought & next time I will pay you upfront when the job next comes around.

As I said before the post was about my days experience which Is what the forum is about.

Kevin.

Ah its lovely,  ;D

You both maybe could have agreed on 50% upfront and the other 50% on completion.

You would have both been happy,

and you would have avoided all this ?

But its good that you are both dealing with this like true gents.  ;)
