No. Are you vat registered? If you are then you claim the vat back on your old van,as you will on your new one.You don't balance one off aginst the other. If your not vat registered you will get a px allowance on your old van against your new one, which you will have too pay vat on, but can't can't claim back on either. Sometimes buying a used van is better off of someone who is a private seller and not vat registered.

Thats the selling price not the buying price. Any van from a garage will look cheap to buy because of the vat. Even a brand new van will seem a bargain when you first look. I looked at a brand new Hiace £12300 ................ + VAT+ Tax+ Extra for metallic paint + delivery + roofbars + ply lining + finance etc.
Except the Vat should be last on the list.  ;)

Hi JSMC

A van that was purchased new and VAT paid has no further VAT implication. But the same van that was purchased new by a VAT registered business becomes "VAT qualifying" as the VAT on a commercial vehicle is claimed back fully.

If a Non Qualifying VAT van was traded and then sold by the dealer he would sell that van at a price without VAT added as the VAT would be included in the price. This is why you will see some prices on the forecourt as full price (no VAT) and others subject to VAT. If a VAT registered business buys a second hand van then they are better off buying a VAT qualifying van as they will be able to claim back the VAT element of it. This would make the identical van cheaper to buy for them than the non qualifying VAT van.

If that business then sold the van at a later date, they would have to sell it plus VAT. If a small, non registered VAT business buys it, then they as the last owners pay the VAT which then goes into the receivers coffers.

jsmc, take your van in to the garage and see what figures they give you. I'd be interested to know. The word is that new vans are very slow to sell at the moment due to the credit issues. They don't exactly shower you with good deals to shift them though. The same new vans have been sitting in the same spots for months round my way whereas the second hand ones seem to be selling pretty well off the forecourts.

We just purchased two more Relays from Citroen, managed to get them to throw in ply etc they even installed a tank in one for us.

Although Pikeys stole all our CATs off all our Relays  two weeks ago cost me 4800.00 scum

If you go VAT reg in the near future you can claim back for vans/machinery (assets) upto 3 years.
so C&E end up sending you a cheque on the first quarter.
