water hardness

hi mates just talking to me mate whos a windy wfp said that if you put polystyrene foam in filtered water it breaks the hardness in the water is this true or is he just pulling me pud again  :D

I remember seeing an article about this last year, but I don't think it's as simple as just passing water over or through polystyrene to remove hardness.
The pen is mightier than the sword (and a lot easier to write with!)
