no cold callers/canvasser signs - ignore?
« on: August 28, 2010, 11:15:25 pm »
Hi Guys

as mentioned in previous threads re the above found on more and more peoples door =

when canvassing, door knocking do you ignore them stickers and knock anyway and if so what kind of response do you get from these people that have these stickers (often looking quite new and recent the stickers not the people) ive also noticed they mention home improvements and a list of other stuff sometimes but not sure thats window cleaning and window cleaning never specified.

if you have knocked on them have any become customers?
one more if a negative reply how do you respond?

I wouldn't buy anything from someone who blatantly ignores my wishes about cold callers. Personally I'd consider it disrespectful.

Drop a flyer,.. but if they ask you not to knock, DON'T KNOCK.

I always knock because all that I'm doing is asking them if they have or have not got a wc. I'm not there to sell them any products just a service if they need one. Never had any probs yet. Also I would imagine if your canvassing area was of houses with long drives etc it would become very frustrating to get 6 continuous houses with signs in windows.

i dropped a flyer though a custys door with dont knock on,turns out that is custy was looking for a  windy at the time so i just happened to get the job,

now one of my loyal custys.

the reason they had the sign on the door was to keep away the electric/gas/window fitter etc.but they did admit that they still read the flyers. ;)

Hi,

I don't knock out of respect. Have once been thanked by a householder who saw me backtrack on seeing the notice.

He who dares wins!

Worst case scenario, the owners say no.

They can also contact trading standards about it.

Matt - not strickly true,

notes, posters, lables on the door have no standing in law, it is upto the person knocking if they choose to take
any notice of these, also the whole cold calling idea is aimed at rogue traders, ie.. gypsies who do drives etc...
bona fide business can knock

Now fully signed up NO CALLING ZONES are a bit different - usually you have a more active commitee that will report you to the TS however a proper trading business is still allowed to knock at worst TS will call you to check that you are a trading business.
Also the NO CALLING ZONE should in the first instant talk to the company/person knocking.

It's one of these great ideas that was supposed to stop grifters/con-men ripping off vunerable householders but
is abused by the NIMBY brigade.

I recall that in one area a poppy seller was reported to TS  :'( - but cant remember thew exact details, but again
an example where instead of people being polite and saying No thanks they want to be little Hitlers.

Smudger most of the areas around me are these no cold calling zones. I just drop them a flyer because I read that trading standards would be called if I knocked.

You are not breaking any laws knocking on a door asking if they'd like a window cleaner. Even the police can't stop you carrying out your lawful business.

Matt - understood, just pointing out that there is a vast difference between a sticker and a no calling zone.

and  are still allowed to knock,  what you most likely find is that a few 'liberals' on the council have steam rollered it through the area,  most people on the streets don't give a fig about the odd call.

TS will only ask you to prove you are a local business, at worst they may keep a record of complaints if you were abusive to people on the door.

but i suspect with all the new cut-backs they will have bigger things to worry about.

I have a village i clean that is a NO CALLING ZONE - still went out and got 6 new cleans from it,
door response was a gratreful one as they wanted a windy.

I always respect the sticker. However as most letterboxes are fiercely sprung it sometimes means that I have problems getting the flyer in the letterbox. The sprung flap more often than not makes a loud noise more than once as I attempt to post my flyer. I have noticed that this often brings people to the door. I always apologise, saying I wanted to respect the sticker and explain I was just going to post my flyer about my window cleaning service...  ;)

What if the sticker says no junk mail / leaflets?
