We use Brodex Hydra alloy poles.  The 18ft is four section so fairly short fully collapsed.  Very durable (unless you stand on them!!)  I have a three section alloy Prolong that's about 3 years old and still going strong. (Not that it has much to do these days ::))

had a gardiners clx18 delivered today, ordered tues evening came thurs am,seems pretty good, how long clamps last is another matter.

I've used harris poles for the last couple of years,so I hate to admit the clx is a lot better, much more user friendly, not bad for a £100,be interesting to see how much life I get out of it,cause if its only 3 months or so ill be back to the harris.
