foot ,n, mouth
« on: June 04, 2010, 08:47:24 am »
I got a text message yesterday from a regular customer asking me if i could clean the carpets at one of her childrens nuserys as she has had an out break of foot and mouth ???  , at first \i thought it was a joke , but i know the custy and phoned her, no joke   .

Is their any thing special i should be using for the clean , or is it a case of a straightforward deep clean /

Fam 30 is what we used to disinfect our footwear during the F&M crisis. This was widely available at farm outlets and veterinary practices. Dunno how it'll effect carpet fibres but I would have thought a  good spray down followed by an acid rinse would suffice as I'm sure Fam 30 is of a high ph.... Worth a try I  would have thought.

are you certain its foot and mouth as it will be all over the news if it is. lets hope its not as anyone who lives in a rural area will know how it affects the rural economy. when the last big outbreak occured i lived right in the middle of an area affected.

and when they started burning the livestock the night sky was lit up with fires dotted all around the horizon and the smell of burning flesh stank everywhere.

plus if it is it would be irresponsible to do the job unless you know what your doing as spreading FM to another area would not be good news.

I would of thought if it is FM it will be out of the owners hand to choose who clears up as defra would be involved. Its really no joke all the roads in and out for a 5 mile radius were closed no one in no one out for weeks during the last crisis

Jeez, if it is F & M then the customer should be telling the local authorities of their suspicions first, not calling a CC  ::)
Seriously Geoff, if there is a strong possibilty of it being F & M, then quick action needs to be taken. This would be the last thing this country needs.

I think that there must be some confusion here...what the nursery probably has is "Hand, Foot and Mouth" which affects small children not "Foot and Mouth" which affects animals with hooves.  These are two separate viruses!  Only one reported case of a human catching the animal Foot and Mouth virus and that was back in the 1960's.

Exactly Lynn.
Geof, don't scare us outdoor enthusiasts with talk of a F&M outbreak. I had to redesign and rebuild our back garden last time, to stop myself from going out of my mind because I couldn't get onto the hills.

I'm with Rich Basey on this one actually... I only had 5 minutes to respond this morning so never give it much thought other than the chemical we and farmers used....

I was a Bio Security Field Officer for DEFRA as some of you might know, hence my (Admittedly) limited knowledge! I could write a book about my 6 months working for smarmy vets with their bad attitude and profiteering from the farmers plight, but I signed something to say I wouldn't :-X!!!

Oh, and the smell..... I can smell it now!!!! Haunting and sad times!!!!

Hi,

I would contact prochem and see if their Microsan kills it.  It contains a broad scale virucidal agent that i think will.  Most viri operate by the same mechanism, so i would expect it to.

Vac, prespray with Microsan, Agi, Extract with crystal green (important as it doesnt take out the microsan), collect money. Purists prolly hate me for it but it will get the job done. Desperate people pay decent on a good pitch.

Hope this helps

PS If its manky i would let the microsan dwell for 10 then prespray CG out of the wand hot before agitation. Again purists dont hate me i just get it done.

No pre vac.
Anything like this you want 'wetted down' and contained ready for extraction in a water soluable state.

My apoligies for not getting back sooner, but I do now have a clearer picture , it is infact hand foot n mouth as Lynn correctly pointed out but I got to admit I thought the same as the majority here as I had not heard of hand foot n mouth.
Apperantly it is a viral diesese affecting mainly children under 10 , will go ahead with clean.
